The maps illustrate the changes made to the common room over the course of five years.
Overall, many new amenities has been installed while a number of tables has been removed to leave room for other areas.
Looking first at the row of facilities from located at the left-hand area from the main entrance. Literally, this area remain relatively untouched with the same kinds of amenities, located at the same position, including a sink, a cupboard, bench, microwave and a refridgerator; except that one of the two benches from five years ago has been replaced by another new microwave, lifting the total number of microwaves in the room to two.
Moving to the other end of the map, before the development there were just only four big round tables occupied the whole main area of the common room, each had six seats around, making it a suitable place for meeting and chatting. Moreover, placed on the far right corner was a bookshelf for student to use. After the refurbrishment, all large tables has been replaced by other three small ones, which two of them are round and one is rectangle in shape, offering wider range of choices for students there to use, and thus sparing more room to equip other facilities. Besides, the bookshelf has been removed instead, they installed three armchairs, making it encircled around the television, creating a spot for public filming or streaming. Meanwhile, a new drinks vending machine and a bench specially designed for laptops have been equipped above and next to the streaming area, respectively.
The maps illustrate the transformation of a coastal village over a 34-year period, from 1995 to the present days.
Overall, it is obvious that the area underwent drastic alterations turning the rural area into more residental area with more sports and reacreational facilities sprung up.
To begin, in 1995 there used to be an extensive farmland in the north-east of the map which was cleared to give way for a golf course. The tennis courts located south the golf course substituted the forest park. Concerning the shops and the fish market along the main road beside the coast, they were demolished and there emerged a chain of restaurants and an apartment complex. The fishing port situated in the sourthern part was also removed giving way for a beach. The housing area lying in the north-west has also witnessed a considerable change. In particular, there have been erected 4 more blocks southward and westward complemented with the road extended west.
Regarding the cafe and the hotel situated opposite each other in the southern corner, they have remained intact. Nonetheless, a car park was constructed next to the hotel.
The picture illustrates how a common room for students has changed within 5 years. Overall, the room has been modernised with the addtion of more communal amenities, catering for a wider variety of activities for students.
Five years ago, the design of the room was relatively simple. Along the left wall from the entrance were a sink, a cupboard, two benches, a microwave, and a refrigerator, respectively. Meanwhile, in the central area of the room, four sets of round tables and chairs were arranged in a zic-zac pattern. Finally, in the right corner of the room was a bookshelf.
Presently, the room has been changed significantly. Nearly all the equipment along the left wall from the entrance remained unchanged, except for one of the benches that has been replaced by another microwave. Moreover, two of the four round tables have been removed, making space for a new rectangular one right at the entrance and a new rectangular bench specialised for laptop use in the central right of the room. At the end of the room, a drinks machine has been added in front of the refrigerator. Finally, the bookshelf has been replaced by a television, surrounded by three new armchairs.
The given maps illustrate how a student common room has been modified between five years ago and now.
Overall, there have been several changes, the most noticeable changes being the reduction in the number of tables, and chairs and some addition regarding furniture, namely microwave, drinks machine, armchairs, and bench for laptops or television.
Looking at the initial map, from the North West to the North East, there was a cupboard, a sink, 2 benches, a microwave and a refrigerator which were all located in the successive order. Moving to the major rest of the map to the Southern side, 4 round tables were situated alternately each of which was surrounded by chairs. Keep going to the South, the student common room was also furnished with a bookshelf in the South West corner.
Turning to the remaining diagram, it is evident that 1 out of 2 benches to the North has been now replaced with another microwave. To the South, the layout has been basically divided into 2 main spaces a table with chairs surrounding it and a bench for laptops. Regarding the Right, there has been an elimination of a round table that has made space for a new rectangle table with chairs around. On the opposite side, a variety of furniture has been placed such as a drinks machine, 3 armchairs and a television. This refurbishment has led to the disappearance of the previous table and the bookshelf.
The maps depict the current layout of Islip's town center in juxtaposition with its proposed development plan.
It is evident that the forthcoming development will significantly alter the town's configuration, with minimal persistence of the existing layout.
In the present arrangement, the northern region comprises open countryside, transitioning southward into a central area filled with shops flanking both sides of the main road. Further south, more commercial establishments are bordered by residential housing on the right and a school situated in the southeast. Additionally, to the south of these residences lies a park, with further housing positioned directly beneath it.
The proposed development plan indicates an ambitious transformation of the town center. The northern countryside will be replaced by a dual carriageway, facilitating improved transportation. The current commercial spaces will be repurposed into a bus station and a shopping center, with the main thoroughfare being designated for pedestrian use only. The park will be relocated to the southern edge of the development, while the previous park area will make way for additional housing units. Notably, the school will retain its original position, and existing residential areas will be diminished yet will remain largely intact, with some adjustments in their placement.
