It’s been a while |
To be honest, I hadn’t held a birthday party for a long time. Basically, it was because I found this kind of event disturbing. However, last year, with a sudden shift, I invited my friends over to my house to celebrate my birthday as I wanted to bond with my friends and colleagues. For that reason, they gave me a tiramisu, which was mouth-watering from the outside to the inside.
I remember the side of the cake was covered by ladyfingers and the top was dusted with cacao powder. I would say the decoration of the dessert was minimal, but chocolate – related food has always been my Achilles heel, so even if it was that simple, I would still appreciate it.
Contrary to the look of the cake, the flavor of the tiramisu was rich. I could taste the mild sweetness of mascarpone, the slight bitterness of cocoa and the light espresso soaked in ladyfingers. At that moment, I thought to myself why I hadn’t done this more often with my friends. Besides the cake, I also prepared other food and drinks to serve the guests, such as wine, fruits, and snacks. That evening had a convivial atmosphere as we had time to socialize instead of talking about work or future plans.
Generally, the tiramisu cake connected closely to my special event, my birthday, so it somewhat became one of the best parts of that day. Would I like to celebrate my birthday again? Certainly, yes. It is such a valid excuse to eat a delicious cake again.
To be honest, I have only received a few cakes throughout my life because sugary dessert has never been my cup of tea. However, if I have to talk about one today, it will have to be a cake that my boyfriend baked for me on Valentine day.
My boyfriend is definitely not the one who enjoys cooking. Despite being mature and living independent from his parents, he could not manage to prepare a decent meal himself. Believe it or not, my boyfriend tried to bake a cake as a gift for me on Valentine Day.
When I opened the present box, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the cake. At first glance, I knew immediately that it was made by him since I bet that there was no bakery in the world that could sell such a terrible cake to their customers. Actually, I would not think it was a cake without my boyfriend telling me it was a cake.
To give a detailed description, it was a chocolate frosting cake with a weird conical shape. Basically, the cake looked like a volcano going to erupt because of the creamy foam on top of it. My boyfriend explained that he failed in molding the standard circular shape so the cake did not look appetizing.
Inside, when you cut the cake into half, the chocolate was melting, creating a creamy taste on your tongue. Although the appearance did not give me an appetite, the texture inside the cake when cut into half was amazing. With the tender and creamy texture and the bitterness of chocolate, I ate the whole cake within a short amount of time.
I really appreciated this present because that was the first time my boyfriend tried to bake a cake for me. I believe that this valentine present was more precious than any other expensive ones. The value lay in the tremendous effort that he took into making the cake, it was spiritual, not material value.
The way I see it, cooking is really a labor of love, it is ultimately a way to show your love and careness to the person you cook to. And the present doesn’t need to be fancy or extravagant, the key is to express your love through it.
Sugary dessert has perennially been my cup of tea. My parents always say that since I was a child, I have developed a sweet tooth and always craved for sugar-sweetened dessert. Because my appetite for cake is unwavering, I have tried different kinds of cake throughout my life. However, the cake which has the most impression on me is the one I received on my 18th birthday.
The cake was called “Athena Gateaux" and it is inspired by Athena - the god of knowledge, talent and wisdom. In addition to her stunning beauty, Athena is also a symbol of feminism and the hidden strength under the soft cover of women. That was the reason why the main decoration of this cake was flowers, which were synonymous with elegance and beauty. With the crunchy cake base made by moist lemon butter cake and signature “athena cream" - strawberry buttercream. I believe that “Athena Gateaux" will win the hearts of even a fastidious person.
There were flowers being decorated on top of it. The flowers were the part which I guess took up most of the time. Each petal was meticulously made with different curves to create a natural shape of blossoming flowers. They were in ombre color with dusty pink at the top and the colors fading to creamy white at the end. The flowers looked so real that everyone would definitely be startled when knowing that they were handmade. Outside the edge of the cake, there were tiny happy birthday quotes written in cursive. The cake was sophisticated enough but not fussy, in fact, it was elegant.
This is definitely the most beautiful cake I have ever seen in my life. I really appreciated this birthday cake which marked my turning 22. The way I see it, the cake was also a wish for me: being gorgeous, energetic and fresh as a daisy like those flowers on the cake.
