In addition to là gì?
Trước khi hiểu cấu trúc In addition to nghĩa là gì thì ta tìm hiểu danh từ Addition mang nghĩa là “sự thêm vào”, “sự bổ sung” hay “phép cộng”.
Ví dụ:
- Addition is a basic mathematical skill. (Phép cộng là một kỹ năng toán học cơ bản.)
- An assistant would be a useful addition to the director. (Một trợ lý sẽ là sự bổ sung cần thiết đối với giám đốc.)
Cả cấu trúc In addition to sẽ mang nghĩa là “ngoài cái gì”, “bên cạnh cái gì”.
Ví dụ:
- In addition to Jenny’s penthouse in Ha Long, she has a resort in Da Lat. (Ngoài căn hộ tầng thượng ở Hạ Long, Jenny có một khu nghỉ dưỡng ở Da Lat.)
- In addition to football, Harry is good at volleyball. (Ngoài bóng đá thì Harry còn giỏi chơi bóng chuyền nữa.)
Cách dùng cấu trúc In addition to trong tiếng Anh
Cách dùng cấu trúc In addition to đó là sử dụng để cung cấp hoặc giới thiệu thêm thông tin về sự việc/hành động đã được nhắc đến ở đằng trước. Vị trí cấu trúc In addition to có thể đứng ở đầu hoặc ở cuối câu. Cụm từ này thường theo sau một danh từ, một cụm danh từ hoặc một danh động từ.
Cấu trúc:
In addition to + Noun/ Pronoun/V-ing
Ví dụ:
- In addition to education, “IELTS Face-Off” is an entertainment program. (Ngoài tính giáo dục, “IELTS Face-Off” còn là một chương trình giải trí.)
- In addition to her intelligence, Jenny is also famous for her pretty. (Ngoài sự thông minh của mình, Jenny còn nổi tiếng bởi sự xinh đẹp.)
Lưu ý khi dùng cấu trúc In addition to
1. In addition đứng đầu không có “to”
Khi sử dụng cấu trúc In addition to đứng đầu câu thì sẽ không có giới từ “to” nữa. Ví dụ:
- In addition to the school payment fee, there’s an admission fee.
= You have to pay the school payment fee. In addition, there’s an admission fee.
(Ngoài phí đóng học thì còn có cả phí nhập học nữa.)
- In addition to providing a new way to relax, the podcast helps me to study easier.
= The podcast provides a new way to relax. In addition, it helps me to study easier.
(Ngoài việc cung cấp một hình thức mới để thư giãn, podcast còn giúp tôi học tập dễ dàng hơn.)
2. Không nhầm với cấu trúc An addition to
Một lưu ý tiếp theo đó là bạn tuyệt đối đừng nhầm lẫn cấu trúc In addition to với An addition to nha.
Cấu trúc something is an addition to something else mang nghĩa: cái gì là nhân tổ bổ sung cho cái gì khác (cái gì được thêm vào để cải thiện cái khác tốt hơn). Ví dụ:
- John is building an addition to his house. (John đang xây thêm phần phụ cho căn hộ của anh ấy.)
- This e-book will be a valuable addition to his knowledge. (Cuốn sách điện tử này sẽ là nhân tố bổ sung đầy giá trị cho kiến thức của anh ấy.)
3. In addition có thể được dùng với vai trò là liên từ.
Trong trường hợp này, In addition đứng độc lập đầu câu và theo sau nó là một dấu phẩy, sử dụng để giới thiệu thêm về một thứ gì đó bên cạnh cái đã đề cập ở trước. Ví dụ:
