1. Dạng bài Advantages and Disadvantages là gì?

Dạng bài Advantages and Disadvantages thường sẽ đưa ra một vấn đề, có thể là một sự phát triển về mặt nào đó, sau đó yêu cầu người viết đưa ra các ưu điểm và nhược điểm của xu hướng này. 

Ví dụ: 

• “Some students prefer to take a gap year between high school and university, to work or to travel. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?”
• “Many foods are shipped from far away. Some people think that eating local food is more environmentally and economically friendly. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?”

Ở dạng bài này, bạn bắt buộc phải đưa ra được đầy đủ luận điểm để hỗ trợ cho cả 2 mặt ưu điểm và nhược điểm, mỗi mặt ở một đoạn thân bài riêng. Cần lưu ý độ dài của hai đoạn thân bài phải tương đối bằng nhau, không được phân tích chi tiết hơn hẳn một mặt nào so với mặt còn lại để đảm bảo mỗi luận điểm đều được phân tích và khai thác đầy đủ và tránh mất điểm phần Task Response.

Tuy nhiên, nếu đề bài yêu cầu đưa ra quan điểm cá nhân, quan điểm này cần được thể hiện xuyên suốt cả 3 phần mở bài – thân bài – kết bài của bài essay

Yêu cầu cơ bản của dạng Advantages and Disadvantages trong Writing Task 2

• Task Response: Thí sinh phải trả lời thật cụ thể và chính xác câu hỏi mà giám khảo đã yêu cầu trong đề bài. Các luận điểm trong bài viết phải hợp lý, bên cạnh đó phải được phân tích một cách rõ ràng, nhất quán.
• Coherence and Cohesion: Bài viết của thí sinh phải có sự gắn kết chặt chẽ. Thí sinh phải có kỹ năng sắp xếp các lập luận và nội dung được đưa ra trong bài luận phải theo một trật tự rõ ràng, có tính logic nhất định. Ngoài ra, bài viết của thí sinh còn phải thực sự dễ hiểu.
• Lexical Resource: Ngoài việc dùng đúng từ vựng, từ vựng trong bài của thí sinh phải thật sự phong phú, được sử dụng một cách tự nhiên, bên cạnh đó thí sinh phải thể hiện được sự linh hoạt trong việc chọn lựa từ ngữ để đưa vào bài viết.
• Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Thí sinh sở hữu khả năng sử dụng các cấu trúc câu đơn, cấu trúc câu ghép, cúc trúc câu phức một cách thành thạo và sử dụng thật chính xác đối với yêu cầu của đề bài.

• General Statement: paraphrase đề bài
• Thesis statement: giới thiệu rằng có những ưu điểm và nhược điểm (+ so sánh nếu cần thiết)

• Supporting ideas: phát triển ý

3. Thân bài 2

• Topic Sentence – Câu chủ đề: paraphrase mặt còn lại của thesis statement (+ trình bày lại so sánh)

4. Kết luận

• Restatement of the answer: diễn giải lại câu luận điểm
• Recommendation: Đưa ra một đề xuất (để trình bày lại ý kiến của bạn)

“In some countries, more and more adults are continuing to live with their parents even after they have completed education and found jobs. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?”

1.2. Ý tưởng triển khai đề thi

Body 1: Disadvantages

• Adults may become over-dependent on parents for basic daily tasks such as cooking or doing laundry -> take the parents’ support for granted -> foster a sense of depreciation. Phụ thuộc bố mẹ trong nhiều việc đơn giản trong cuộc sống -> cảm thấy việc bố mẹ giúp đỡ là đương nhiên -> không trân trọng.
• Adults may be misunderstood as someone who has no financial power because they still need to stay with their parents. Bị hiểu nhầm thành những người không có khả năng tài chính nên mới phải ở với bố mẹ

Body 2: Advantages

• Less financial burden, especially for the ones who only have meager income from entry-level jobs. Giảm gánh nặng tài chính, đặc biệt cho những người có thu nhập không khá giả từ những công việc khi họ mới ra trường.
• They will be able to take good care of their parents, who are prone to some geriatrics diseases such as dementia. Họ có thể giúp đỡ và chăm sóc bố mẹ, những người thường mắc phải những căn bệnh người già như suy giảm trí nhớ.

Sample 1

In the past, most people worked for small businesses, while more people now work for large businesses. What are the advantages and disadvantages of working for large businesses?

Due to advances in technology and the job market, many people who worked in small companies nowadays work for large ones. Certainly, there are positive and negative points in both places. This essay will discuss what are the advantages and disadvantages of working for a huge business.

On the one hand, working for a huge company can be a great experience once workers have more opportunities and better conditions of job that lead to a satisfactory salary. These benefits can motivate individuals to choose this kind of site rather than small companies. For instance, working for a large and well-known company sited in big metropolitans, the worker has more chance to choose where city he wants to live. In other words, the person has more opportunity to know other cities, and cultures and this way to improve his networking. 

But on the other hand, having a job in a huge company can lead to competition among workers in order to promote an uncontrolled rance for being promoted and also a life without work-life balance owing to excess of activities. For example, the worker always needs to find out ways to stand out of crowd. In addition, this competition among people is unhealthy, damaging their mental health. The more individuals are thinking only about occupation, money, and promotion, the more mental and physical disorders they will have. Damaging mental health is not worth it. 

In conclusion, there are a plethora of pros and cons to working for large companies. People need to make decisions balancing  both sides. This essay argued about the upsides and downsides of one kind of business.

Sample 2

Many foods are shipped from far away. Some people think that eating local foods is more environmentally and economical. Do you think the advantages outweigh its disadvantages?

The shipping of a wide range of foods from other cities or countries may have an adverse impact on locally produced food in this modern world of aggressive competition. However, the latter, in my own eyes, obviously offers more merits than demerits.

On the face of it, the consumption of local food might be said to have certain drawbacks. One of them is the lack of diversity or exotic taste. Without access to strange food from far away, people in Vietnam today, for instance, would feel fed up with a limited number of food choices or would never have a chance to try, and probably enjoy, the taste of a similar type of food which is actually imported from other countries, such as Kobe beef from Japan.

However, compared with food transported from other regions, eating food produced locally is significantly more beneficial in economic, environmental, and educational terms. From an economic point of view, local food does not involve excessive transportation leading to higher and higher costs, especially with increasing fuel prices taken into account.

This is also associated with less damaging effects on the environment related to the shipping of food products by plane from abroad. In terms of education, consuming local food helps nurture patriotism among young generations, orienting them towards preserving and developing the sense of using indigenous products.

In today’s world of globalization, the effort to consume local food is thus playing an indispensable role in maintaining the identity of each and every local culture.

In a word, the downside of eating locally produced food is outweighed by its upside. This is, in actual fact, true from economic, environmental, and educational viewpoints.

Sample 3

Computers are becoming an essential part of school lessons. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and give your own opinion.

Nowadays, computers are becoming an indispensable part of school lessons since they act as a plethora of information along with the development of interest amongst the students, however, they do create a sense of dependence on them when used excessively. This essay would highlight how these technological marvels prove to be beneficial for young minds along with their downsides.

A major advantage of using this technology in the study space is that it acts as a virtual library where students can access nearly all the information that they need. For example, pupils can get extra details on any subject be it science or history easily with just the click of a button. Therefore, computers act as a great tool and a helping hand in the learner’s knowledge.

Secondly, when automation is integrated into lessons, students are expected to be more interested in the subjects they are studying. For instance, delivering teaching through interactive smart boards and taking students on virtual field trips as well as using other online resources, surely enhance student engagement and their experience. Thus, smart devices can encourage more active participation in the process of education, which is hard to achieve through traditional methods.

On the other hand, a major disadvantage is a complete dependence as when computers and other technological tools are used constantly, students develop a dependence upon them. To illustrate, pupils, who is not in a habit to do math without using a calculator, lose the ability to solve mathematical problems manually which affects their analytical thinking and brain power. Hence, Students must practice these simple skills without any external aid regularly to ensure that their competency levels do not deteriorate.

In conclusion, I feel that the use of computers for educating children can be of great use, but should be supervised and in my opinion, there should be a provision for using computers only for a specified period instead of the entire day. This would encourage maximum productivity as well as reduce the chances of addiction.
