Topic Sentence là gì?
Topic Sentence là câu chủ đề của một đoạn văn, câu này thường xuất hiện đầu tiên trong bài viết IELTS Writing Task 2. Câu Topic Sentence được coi là câu trọng tâm tóm lược ý chính của đoạn văn trong bài làm IELTS Writing Task 2, câu này luôn cung cấp thông tin và có thể hoàn toàn định hướng luôn nội dung của toàn đoạn văn. Khi thí sinh viết câu này hãy chú ý đảm bảo các tiêu chí như sau: Ngắn gọn – Tổng quát ý – Rõ ràng để câu có thể đủ ý nhất.
Thành phần của câu Topic Sentence trong IELTS Writing Task 2
1. Các thành phần chính trong câu chủ đề
Khi bạn viết thân bài, những câu nêu ý chính được gọi là câu chủ đề. Nếu viết tốt câu topic sentence, bạn dễ dàng có khả năng chạm tới mốc band 7.0+, còn nếu viết kém thì sẽ mất điểm thê thảm ở tiêu chí Task Response đó. Vậy để đảm bảo cách viết Topic Sentence hay câu chủ đề của mình hiệu quả và đúng trọng tâm, chúng ta cũng cần nắm được những yếu tố tạo nên một câu chủ đề tốt. Về cơ bản câu chủ đề trong IELTS Writing Task 2 có cấu trúc như sau:
Chủ đề của câu Topic Sentence sẽ quyết định hướng đi cho những câu tiếp theo. Còn nội dung chính của câu chủ đề trong IELTS Writing Task 2 sẽ là thứ cụ thể chúng ta cần phải phát triển và làm rõ.
2. Một số cấu trúc thường được sử dụng trong cách viết Topic Sentence
Dưới đây là một số cấu trúc câu bạn nên sử dụng để triển khai câu topic sentence khi luyện thi IELTS tại nhà. Những cấu trúc này dễ dàng áp dụng vào mọi đề bài được giao, cụ thể:
- There are several benefits of X
- The first advantage is (that SV) / Another benefit is (that SV)
- Firstly, a merit of X could be + Nphrase / Secondly, another plus point is probably + Nphrase
Một số lỗi sai cần lưu ý khi viết topic sentence
Trong quá trình luyện thi IELTS Writing, nhiều người viết có thể mắc 3 lỗi sai sau:

Câu chủ đề không nhắc lại chủ đề trọng tâm của bài viết.

Câu chủ đề không đủ khái quát nội dung của đoạn văn.
-
Câu chủ đề không trực tiếp phát triển quan điểm người viết ở câu luận điểm.
Các ví dụ sau đây sẽ phân tích cụ thể các lỗi thường gặp trong câu chủ đề (topic sentence) của đoạn văn:
Ví dụ 1:
Chủ đề: Cycling is becoming less and less popular in many places around the world. What are the reasons for this trend? Can you suggest some ways to make cycling more popular?
Câu mở đoạn cho phần lý do: “There are two main reasons for this.”
Vấn đề: Topic sentence – Câu chủ đề không chứa nội dung chính của bài viết (Cycling is becoming less popular) và gây khó hiểu cho người đọc vì người đọc không hiểu “this” ở đây chỉ điều gì.
Thay cho lối viết mơ hồ trên, người viết nên viết đầy đủ và nhắc lại chủ đề của bài viết “Việc đạp xe trở nên kém thịnh hành hơn”.
Sửa: There are two main reasons (controlling idea) for cycling becoming less popular (topic).
Ví dụ 2:
Chủ đề: Art classes should be a compulsory part of high school education. Do you agree or disagree?
Câu luận điểm ở mở bài: Although art classes can benefit the development of high school students, I disagree that such classes should be made compulsory. (Mặc dù các lớp học về nghệ thuật mang lại lợi ích cho sự phát triển của học sinh, tôi không đồng ý rằng các lớp học như vậy nên được thực hiện bắt buộc.)
Đoạn thân bài thứ nhất về những lợi ích của “Art classes”:
High school students nowadays are experiencing a much higher amount of stress from school than ever before. They have to study too many subjects that require different skill sets, tremendous effort and discipline. However, they can both have fun and learn something at the same time during art classes. Additionally, these classes help students improve their creativity through many activities of creating art works.
Vấn đề: Câu chủ đề (topic sentence) không có tính bao quát đại ý của cả đoạn và thưc tế chỉ nêu một tình trạng hiện tại của học sinh trung học.
Người viết có thể sửa lại câu mở đoạn trên như sau:
Art classes can relieve students’ stress from study and increase their creativity.
Với câu chủ đề (topic sentence) trên, chủ đề của bài luận (art classes) đã được nhắc đến và ý chính của đoạn văn đã được truyền tải rõ ràng bằng 2 cụm từ diễn đạt 2 lợi ích mà art classes mang lại đó là ‘relieve stress and increase creativity’.
Đoạn văn hoàn chỉnh sau khi đã có câu mở đoạn phù hợp:
Art classes (topic) can relieve students’ stress from study and increase their creativity (controlling idea). In fact, high school students nowadays are experiencing a much higher amount of stress from school than ever before because they have to study too many subjects that require different skill sets, tremendous effort and discipline. However, they can both have a chance to ease their mind and learn something at the same time during art classes. Additionally, these classes help students improve their creativity through many activities of creating art works.
Ví dụ 3:
Đề bài: Education for young people is important in many countries. However, some people think that the government should spend more money on education in adult population who cannot read and write. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Luận điểm ở mở bài: Although there are some drawbacks if the government spend more money on adult education, I agree that it is a necessary thing to do. (Mặc dù có một số bất lợi nếu chính phủ chi tiêu nhiều tiền hơn cho giáo dục người lớn, tôi đồng ý rằng đó là một điều cần thiết phải làm.)
Đoạn thân bài thứ nhất: On the one hand, spending government budget on adult illiteracy (topic) has a number of disadvantages (controlling idea).
Đoạn thân bài thứ hai:
On the other hand, I believe that investing in the youth education is more important than adult illiteracy. This is because the number of white-collar jobs is on the increase while blue-collar jobs are gradually superseded by automatic devices. This means a substantial number of untrained people are being made redundant, which is equivalent to a higher rate of unemployment.
Vấn đề: Câu chủ đề (topic sentence) chưa khớp với luận điểm chính của bài cũng như đại ý của toàn đoạn văn vì chủ đề chính là việc đầu tư cho ‘adult education’, không có so sánh với ‘youth education’
Sửa lại câu chủ đề (topic sentence):
On the other hand, I believe that investing in adult illiteracy (topic) is important due to several benefits (controlling idea).

Dạng câu hỏi
- Why is it happening? Are there any solutions to this problem?
- What are the reasons? What can be done to solve this problem?
Thân bài 1: To begin with, [The topic] is attributed to various factors.
Thân bài 2: Fortunately, there are a number of viable solutions to help deal with the problem of [the topic].
Ví dụ:
Air pollution has become a big issue in many cities. What are the causes? What are the solutions?
Luận điểm ở mở bài: My essay below will analyze both the causes and solutions to this concern.
Thân bài 1:
To begin with, air pollution in some major cities is attributed to various factors.
Thân bài 2:
Fortunately, there are a number of viable solutions to help deal with the problem of air pollution.
Dạng bài Advantages and Disadvantages
1. Is this a positive or a negative development?
Thân bài 1: On the one hand, [The topic] can be disadvantageous/ advantageous in some certain aspect.
Thân bài 2: On the other hand, [The topic] is a positive/ negative development for various reasons.
2. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages ?
Thân bài 1: On the one hand, [The topic] may bring about a number of beneficial/ detrimental effects.
Thân bài 2: On the other hand, I claim that the disadvantages/ advantages of [the topic] are greater due to many reasons.
Ví dụ:
Some universities now offer their courses on the Internet as an alternative to classes delivered in campus. Is this a positive or negative development?
Luận điểm ở mở bài: In my opinion, this trend could have both positive and negative consequences in equal measure.
Thân bài 1:
On the one hand, enrolling in online courses instead of offline ones can be disadvantageous in some certain aspect.
Thân bài 2:
On the other hand, online university courses are a positive development for various reasons.
Dạng đề Discuss both views
On the one hand, there are some reasons why people hold a belief that [the 1st opinion]
On the other hand, I firmly believe that + [the 2nd opinion] ( ý kiến ở thân bài 2 là ý kiến mà người viết đồng tình.)
Ví dụ:
Some people think the government should spend money on roads and motorways, while others believe that improving public transport systems is more important. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Đối với đề này, người viết cần bàn luận tại sao một số người nghĩ government nên dành tiền đầu tư road systems và tại sao một số người khác tin rằng đầu tư cho public transport quan trọng hơn.
Luận điểm ở mở bài: Both sides of this argument will be discussed in the essay below , and my opinion is drawn in the end.
Thân bài 1:
On the one hand, there are some reasons why people think money from governments should be invested in expanding and improving roads.
Thân bài 2:
On the other hand, it is understandable why many people think that investing in public transport is more important.
