Describe a performance you recently watched | Bài mẫu Speaking Part 2
Describe a performance you watched recently. You should say:
And explain why you watched it.
To be honest, I am nowhere near an art lover but there is one performance I watched recently that really blew my mind. It is the 25th-anniversary performance of the all-time best musical “The 1 Phantom of The Opera”. Actually, it was not a live performance but just a recorded version premiered on Youtube. This epic production was made available for free streaming in 2 days as a gift to all the audience at home during the COVID-19 quarantine.
I came across the video while glancing through my Youtube feed on a late Sunday night, and decided to give it a try since I didn’t have anything else to do. The story based on the French novel by Gaston Leroux tells the tale of an Opera house in Paris that is haunted by a mysterious masked man calling himself “The Phantom”. He secretly gives voice lessons to a young woman named Christine and consequently falls in love with her, as everyone can tell with this familiar motif.
At first, I thought it would just be another love story, but it turned out to be more than that. The moral of this story is about the beauty underneath the ugliness, and the power of compassion and empathy. This is a sentiment shared in many stories of French classical literature.
I did not expect anything from this complete random choice, yet it gave me an out of this world experience. The show was a perfectly crafted musical theater with all elements in a consistently brilliant accord. The theme, the incredible music, the ravishing costumes, and marvelous staging effects all combined create a classic masterpiece but still very approachable for the mass audience, even for people with little enthusiasm in art like me.
After three hours straight with my eyes glued to the screen, I finally understood the reason why this musical has become such a cultural phenomenon. Although having a seemingly old-fashioned plot – a love story, “The Phantom of The Opera” has proven why it stands the test of time for the values and the lessons it delivers.
I'd like to tell you about the performance of my favorite rock band called Oldcodex.
First, let me give you some background information about the band: Oldcodex is a Japanese rock band formed by a singer named Ta_2 and a painter Yorke. At their concerts, they give one-and-only performances with Ta_2 singing and Yorke simultaneously painting dynamic artworks.
I’ve been their fan for years. Last week, they uploaded a new video on their channel on Youtube, which included highlights of their biggest concert in Japan last year.
In the video, they performed a song called “Aching Horns”, one of their most popular songs. Ta_2 sang so energetically that it seemed like he was pouring his heart out. While I got absorbed in Ta_2’s sorrowful singing, my eyes were also pleased by the beautiful psychedelic horns Yorke was painting on a canvas on the stage.
That was one of the most impressive performances I've ever watched. Oldcodex is not really a kind of worldwide famous band, but they are unique. They've produced great songs and performances that only they can create. One day, when I save enough money, I hope that I can travel to Japan and enjoy their performances with my own eyes rather than watching them on my laptop's screen.
That’s all I want to share with you.
Today I‘d like to share with you a singing performance that has had a lasting impression on me until now.
It was a gig of Ha Anh Tuan- one of the most well-known singers in Vietnam.
He is applauded for his beautiful voice that is free of rigid singing techniques and captures the audience’s attention from the first notes.
The gig was held on a university campus in Da Lat- a Southern province of Vietnam. Ha Anh Tuan seems to have a strong preference for this place as most of his concerts have taken place there.
Well, it might sound a bit weird, but I went to the gig alone. I just wanted solo travel, and I knew at that time that my friends were swamped with work, so it would be no good asking them to go with me.
As I said earlier, I’m really into Ha Anh Tuan. His voice is so awesome. He never mimics any other singers’ styles; he chooses his own style: gentle, delicate but powerful, which is unique and blows the audience away whenever he is on stage. I especially like the way he reaches high notes perfectly. He knows how to conceal his weaknesses and show off his strength. I am absorbed in every minute of his performance because it is flawless to me.
Besides that, the gig took place in the midst of autumn in Da Lat. It was breezy and a bit cold, but the flock of the audience soon warmed me up. They swayed gently with the melody and looked over the moon. The gig ended on a high note, and I did have a blast and feel energised to get back to my city after months of heavy workloads.
That’s all I want to say.
