3. Sample Speaking: Describe a smartphone
I received my first mobile phone about 7 years ago when I was about to go to high school. Actually, my parents were on the fence for a while about whether or not I should have a cell phone because they didn’t want to expose me to the dark world of webs. But eventually, they gave me a smartphone as a reward for my endeavor – I got a place at one of the best high schools in my district, and I was on cloud nine.
My parents took me to the shop and let me choose one, and I went for a white Samsung phone. I had to say that I wanted to have a more luxurious smartphone, but my parents said that it would be over the budget. Anyway, I was satisfied with the phone because it was also a cutting-edge phone with many functions.
My life changed a lot since I had the phone. It helped me keep in touch with my friends and family regardless of distance and time. Plus, the phone gave me a sense of independence. I did not have to borrow my mother’s phone to play games. Instead, I could download some on my phone and play them whenever I wanted. I was also able to access the Internet for study purposes as well.
However, the phone somehow negatively changed my life as I overused my phone and became addicted to social media. I hardly hit the hay before midnight, so I had to wear glasses due to my extreme short-sightedness. I also got low marks at school, which really let my parents down. Then, my parents had to strictly manage my screen time, which was disturbing. But the thing was that this method did work because I could spend less time using my phone and more time on studying.

1. What are the advantages of smartphones these days?
Nobody can deny the uncountable benefits of smartphones in our lives. Perhaps the first and foremost advantage is that smartphones bring people close, either by text, voice calls, or video calls.
Moreover, using phones is time-saving, as people are able to make transactions with a smartphone and a mobile banking app. So, it is no longer a hustle to pay utility bills.

2. Do young and old people use phones in the same way?
I don’t think that young and old generations use their phone in a similar way, as they would have different preferences. Seniors tend to use their phones to make phone calls or pick up incoming calls. Sometimes, they also go online to keep themselves updated on the latest news of their family members and friends.
Young people are more tech-savvy, so besides those purposes they take advantage of their phone to snap photos, or play games. They can also apply such tools as words or excel into their study and work.

3. Many people think mobile phones can be annoying at times. Can you give any examples of that?
I think mobile phones do disturb or irritate people at times, especially in public places requiring quietness. For instance, when someone is in a movie theater or a library, and unfortunately, their phones constantly ring or vibrate; as a result, the sound can distract other people from what they are watching or reading. Another example is in the context of a meeting; a buzzing phone can divert people’s attention from their discussion. And of course, its owner will be considered as unprofessional.
- Disturb (v): gây phiền toái
- Irritate (v): làm bực tức
- Vibrate (v): rung (điện thoại,…)
- Divert someone from something (phr.): chuyển hướng sự chú ý của ai
- Unprofessional (adj.): không chuyên nghiệp
