If there were a competition for the most terrific experience, the time I helped my grandmother out with her new phone would be a strong contender.

If memory serves me correctly, it was just a few days before the social distancing took place last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As soon as we learned about the policy, my family decided to buy a smartphone so that my grandmother could contact us. She was living with my uncle and quite away from my house. Yet, it was of paramount importance to check her out frequently because of the lethal virus.

In terms of the device, it was not really cutting-edge or expensive because it was bought for the purpose of video calls only. It fitted perfectly in the palm of the hand and was equipped with a software that guaranteed face recognition for the sake of simplicity.

It was my grandma’s first smartphone ever, so I had to guide her how to use the phone. Basically, I told her how to charge the phone and showed her how to use automatic recognition for opening. I downloaded the social networking app and created her an account so that we could use the messaging utility. We also practiced making and receiving calls dozens of times to make sure that she would be able to reach out to us if there was a problem. It was painstaking since she was a bit absent-minded.

To cut the long story short, it is definitely a memorable experience for me.

Từ vựng

  • Social distancing (noun phrase): hạn chế tiếp xúc xã hội
  • Of paramount importance (phrase): quan trọng hàng đầu
  • Lethal (a): gây chết người
  • Cutting-edge (a): tiên tiến
  • The palm of the hand (noun phrase): lòng bàn tay
  • Face recognition (noun phrase): nhận dạng khuôn mặt
  • Messaging utility (noun phrase): tiện ích nhắn tin
  • Painstaking (a): kiên nhẫn
  • Absent-minded (a): lơ đãng

This topic reminds me of an experience when I taught my grandma how to use her newly-bought smartphone.

More or less 3 months ago, after my nerve-racking exam season, I was in desperate need of a short break. That’s why I decided to go back to my hometown to visit my granny who is around 80 years old now. She’s also my best friend. The day I arrived at her house, I saw her struggling with her brand new iPhone.

She’s been long known for her absent-mindedness, so I doubt that she could remember how to use such a sophisticated gadget. You know, the elderly didn’t have any exposure to cutting-edge technology when they were young like us, so this was much of a challenge for her. Therefore, I patently taught my granny how to use her phone.

I told her to jot down every single thing I taught her, such as how to swipe the screen to find her favorite applications, or how to zoom an image with two fingers. She wasn’t a very quick learner, though. It’s quite obvious, as I believe the aging process is doing its job, so I kept repeating everything to her and tried not to lose my temper.

Well I am also proud to say that I am a self-possessed individual, so after 2 months, she nailed it. I mean, she is now able to make a video call by herself and create her own Instagram account without anybody’s assistance. I guess this can be seen as a success for both of us.

Từ vựng

  • Newly-bought: mới mua
  • Be in desperate need of: rất cần
  • Absent-mindedness: chứng đãng trí, hay quên
  • Sophisticated: tinh vi, tỉ mỉ
  • Cutting-edge technology: công nghệ hiện đại
  • Jot down: ghi chú
  • Swipe the screen: vuốt màn hình
  • The aging process: quá trình lão hoá
  • Lose my temper: mất bình tĩnh, nổi nóng
  • A self-possessed individual: một người bình tĩnh

Bài mẫu IELTS Speaking Part 3: Old people and technology

1. Is it easy for old people to learn new things?

Honestly, it is not really challenging if they are willing to make changes and are in good mental condition. They probably just need some practice to remember things well.

But, you also have to understand that for those who are facing memory problems like dementia, it would be intricate.

  • Challenging (a): thách thức
  • Dementia (n): sa sút trí tuệ
  • Intricate (a): phức tạp

Bài giải liệt kê 2 mặt dễ và khó. Thí sinh có thể chia theo nhóm tuổi; ví dụ nhóm 50-65 và 65+.

2. Why do some old people refuse to use new technology?

Well in truth, there are several reasons for this.

Firstly, they are fond of their usual habits, and they probably think that they could survive without using gadgets. Taking my grandmother as an example, she only agreed to learn how to use the phone when she was explained how crucial it was during the social distancing policy.

Secondly, they would probably give up when failing so many times due to their health problems. To use a mouse when operating a computer needs really good hand work while most elderly people have trouble with limb coordination.

  • Limb coordination (noun phrase): sự phối hợp chân tay.

→ Hình thức liệt kê hai lý do. Thí sinh có thể lấy ví dụ thực tiễn để bàn luận nếu không biết cách giải thích.

3. Are there any differences in the young and the old’s opinion about new changes?

Well based on my experience, it is fairly distinct when the young tend to welcome greener pastures. Oppositely, the aged are more skeptical and cautious when it comes to winds of changes.

Yet, I think somehow deep down in their hearts, they, young and old alike, accept the fair truth that life‘s unheralded changeover is inevitable.

  • Greener pastures (idiom): đồng cỏ xanh hơn, ý ám chỉ những điều mới mẻ hay ho hơn
  • Skeptical and cautious (a): hoài nghi và thận trọng
  • Winds of changes (a): những luồng gió mới
  • Young and old alike (phrase): trẻ và già như nhau
  • Unheralded changeover (noun phrase): sự thay đổi không được báo trước
  • Inevitable (a): không thể tránh khỏi
