Bài mẫu:
In Vietnam, there are lakes, rivers and bays pretty much everywhere and all of them have their own history. However, one that’s really prominent due to its scenic beauty and rich legends is Hoan Kiem Lake, or Sword Lake as it’s usually called in English – a small freshwater lake in Hanoi.
Situated in the heart of the capital, Sword Lake has long been a symbol of Hanoi, an image of nostalgia that the name “Hanoi” evokes in the minds of any Hanoians that reside abroad. The name “Hoan Kiem” of the lake directly translates to “Return the sword” in English, which stems from the legend of King Le Thai returning a magic sword to a sacred turtle after using this sword to defeat Ming dynasty invaders.
Hence, the lake has a special role in the history of the city and the country as a whole. But this is not the only thing that helps make it stand out, as Sword Lake contains certain characteristics that cannot be found elsewhere in Vietnam, too. While the water of the lake is famous for being an ever-lasting green, the color shades change depending on the reflection of the sky. Along with lush greenery surrounding the lake, the shimmering water and trees turn the whole area a picture of breath-taking serenity.
Beside having an important cultural background and stunning natural beauty, Sword Lake is also the focal point of Hanoi people’s lives. This is because it is surrounded by many historical structures, such as the Old Quarter, the Great Cathedral or the French colonial era architectural buildings…
Thus, the lake is a meeting place when it comes to special occasions and can be considered a major cultural center of Hanoi, hosting many important events of a variety of fields. On normal days, the lake still has a lot of activities, including exercises like walking, biking or dancing or just simply sitting on the benches and admiring the view.
Due to the unique beauty and historical, as well as cultural values, Sword Lake is growing in fame inside and outside of Vietnam, remaining one of the top spots to visit in Hanoi. As a Hanoian myself, it forever holds an important position in my heart.

I am going to talk about the Mekong river, one of the biggest and most important rivers located in southwestern part of Vietnam. With a length of about 2,700 miles, the river is the 7th longest is Asia. Locally, it’s called “River of the Nine Dragons” because the small branches of the river are, since time immemorial, associated with the image of nine majestic dragons. Needless to say, the river is mentioned in a variety of poems and songs.
In terms of agriculture, the mighty river together with its surrounding delta has been known as the agricultural heart of southern Vietnam and the ‘rice bowl’ of the whole country. The Mekong is also Vietnam’s most important fishing region.
If you are a discerning tourist who really has ‘wearing a conical hat in a sampan boat in Vietnam’ on your bucket list, a trip to Mekong Delta is a must. It is carpeted in a dizzying variety of greens and is also a place where boats, houses and markets float upon the innumerable rivers, canals and streams that criss-cross the landscape like arteries. Embarking on a Mekong River cruise provides tourists with fascinating insight into the local rural way of life, including the opportunity to visit some of the region’s best-known sites, along with plenty of hidden gems.
Từ vựng:

Câu trả lời mẫu IELTS Speaking Part 3: River & Lake
1. How can lakes benefit local people?
I believe lakes can do the local community a lot of good. First off, for lakes in the cities, they are such a fresh change in terms of scenery compared to the skyscrapers and busy streets one usually encounters. These lakes can also be a place for recreational and social activities, namely exercises or meet-ups. Another noticeable feature of lakes is that they can ease the impact of extreme weather phenomena and provide fresher air for residents.
- do somebody some good: có lợi với ai
- scenery (n): quang cảnh
- encounter (v): bắt gặp
- phenomena (n): hiện tượng
2. Do you think rivers attract tourists?
Well, I think this is true in most cases. Natural water bodies like rivers provide visitors, especially ones who reside in hectic urban areas, a chance to escape the crowds and get back to nature. Not only will they be able to experience a breath of fresh air, different from the city’s hustle and bustle, but they will also find a wealth of wildlife in the surrounding area.
Although I understand that it sometimes takes more than beautiful rivers and some recreations to promote nature-based tourism, I’d say usually rivers tend to be a tourist attraction.
- water body (n): thủy vực
- hectic (a): tất bật, xô bồ
- escape the crowds (phr): đi đến nơi hẻo lánh, ít người
- get back to nature (phr): quay về thiên nhiên
- hustle and bustle (phr): ồn ào, nhộn nhịp
- a wealth of (phr): nhiều
- recreation (n): giải trí
- nature-based tourism (n): du lịch sinh thái
3. Are rivers/lakes good for transport? Why?
Without a doubt. Although it might not be that obvious, rivers and lakes are two of the main modes of water transportation. They were probably more important in the past though, since back in the days they used to be the most efficient transportation method.
Now people have more options with planes and all, but rivers and lakes are still widely used as they are cost-effective and good for carrying heavy merchandise. While some drawbacks remain, such as the danger of weather hazards or pirates, this means of transport is still prevalent.
- without a doubt (phr): không nghi ngờ gì
- cost-effective (a): tiết kiệm chi phí
- merchandise (n): hàng hóa
- weather hazards (n): những mối nguy từ thời tiết
- prevalent (a): thịnh hành
