To trong tiếng Anh có nghĩa là gì?

To là giới từ phổ biến trong tiếng Anh, thường mang ý nghĩa để, đến,...

Ví dụ:

- I work hard to get where I want to go (Tôi làm việc chăm chỉ để đến những nơi mà tôi muốn).

- I'm going from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City to see my parents (Tôi đang đi từ Hà Nội đến thành phố Hồ Chí Minh để gặp bố mẹ tôi).

Cách dùng to trong tiếng Anh

Ngoại những nghĩa cơ bản ở trên, to còn được sử dụng với nhiều vai trò và ý nghĩa nghĩa khác nhau.

Cụ thể:

1. Dùng to với vai trò trong một động từ nguyên mẫu có to

To có thể dùng trong động từ nguyên mẫu có “to”. Lúc này, to sẽ đứng trước một động từ nguyên mẫu nhằm đảm bảo cấu trúc ngữ pháp và ngữ nghĩa của động từ trước nó.

Ví dụ:

- The doctors advised me to limit my drinking (Các bác sĩ khuyên tôi nên hạn chế uống bia)

- I want to save money to buy a motorbike (Tôi muốn tiết kiệm tiền để mua một chiếc xe máy)

2. Dùng to với vai trò là một giới từ

Trong tiếng Anh, to được dùng phổ biến với vai trò là một giới từ. Và với mỗi ngữ cảnh khác nhau thì “to” cũng mang nghĩa khác nhau. Cụ thể:

- To dùng để chỉ nơi chốn, hoặc di chuyển từ địa điểm này sang địa điểm khác:

Ví dụ: We went to the zoo (Chúng tôi đã đi đến vườn bách thú).

- To dùng để chỉ giới hạn hoặc điểm kết thúc của một cái gì đó

Ví dụ: Today, the stock price of FLC has dropped to the lowest level (Hôm nay, giá cổ phiếu của FLC đã giảm đến mức thấp nhất).

- To dùng để chỉ một mối quan hệ.

Ví dụ: She is very important to me (Cô ấy rất quan trọng với tôi).

- To dùng để chỉ một khoảng thời gian hoặc một giai đoạn nhất định.

Ví dụ: I had to work Monday to Sunday to get a promotion (Tôi đã phải làm việc từ thứ hai đến chủ nhật để được thăng chức).

3. Một số tình từ đi kèm với giới từ to

Ngoài ra, to còn được sử dụng đi kèm với các động từ, tính từ hoặc danh từ trong tiếng Anh. Bao gồm:

- Grateful to sb (biết ơn ai)

- Harmful to sb (for sth) (có hại cho ai (cho cái gì)

- Important to (quan trọng)

- Identical to sb (giống hệt)

- Kind to (tử tế)

- Familiar to sb (quen thuộc đối với ai)

- Clear to (rõ ràng)

- Contrary to (trái lại, đối lập)

- Equal to (tương đương với)

- Exposed to (phơi bày, để lộ)

- Likely to (có thể)

- Lucky to (may mắn)

- Liable to (có khả năng bị)

- Necessary to sth/sb (cần thiết cho việc gì / cho ai)

- Next to (kế bên)

- Open to (cởi mở)

- Able to (có thể)

- Acceptable to (có thể chấp nhận)

- Accustomed to (quen với)

- Agreeable to (có thể đồng ý)

- Addicted to (đam mê)

- Available to sb (sẵn cho ai)

- Delightful to sb (thú vị đối với ai)

- Favourable to (tán thành, ủng hộ)

- Pleasant to (hài lòng)

- Preferable to (đáng thích hơn)

- Profitable to (có lợi)

- Responsible to sb (có trách nhiệm với ai)

- Rude to (thô lỗ, cộc cằn)

- Similar to (giống, tương tự)

- Useful to sb (có ích cho ai)

- Willing to (sẵn lòng)

Phân biệt cách dùng to V và V-ing

To V (động từ nguyên mẫu có to) và V-ing (danh động từ) có chức năng và vị trí như nhau. Vì thế, rất nhiều người thường không phân biệt được khi nào sử dụng to V và khi nào dùng V-ing. Tuy nhiên, bạn có thể phân biệt thông qua cách dưới đây:

1. Những động từ sử dụng to V

Có một số động từ mà theo sau nó là to V. Tham khảo ngay: 

- Afford: đủ khả năng

- Bear: chịu đựng

- Decide: quyết định

- Learn : học hỏi

- Manage: thành công

- Pretend: giả vời

- Fail: thất bại

- Choose: lựa chọn

- Wish: ước

- Intend: dự định

- Propose: đề xuất

- Swear: thề

- Appear: xuất hiện

- Begin: bắt đầu

- Expect” Mong đợi

- Hesitate: do dự

- Neglect: thờ ơ

- Seem: mong chờ

2. Những động từ sử dụng V - ing

Dưới đây là những động từ thường dùng V-ing đi cùng để bạn tham khảo:
