Cấu trúc Continue là gì?

Continue là một động từ trong tiếng Anh có nghĩa là “tiếp tục”.

-> Cấu trúc Continue được sử dụng khá phổ biến trong diễn đạt ngữ nghĩa: tiếp tục làm/thực hiện điều gì đó. Ví dụ:

• If Jenny continues calling me, I will tell her father. (Nếu như Jenny tiếp tục gọi cho tôi, tôi sẽ nói với bố của anh ta.)
• I understand John’s opinion. He still wants to continue studying Korean. (Tôi hiểu quan điểm của John. Anh ta vẫn muốn tiếp tục học tiếng Hàn.)
• Kathy continued drinking until she got drunk. (Kathy tiếp tục uống cho đến khi cô ta say.)

Chức năng Continue trong câu

Khi sử dụng cấu trúc continue thì người học cần lưu ý những điều sau:

• Thứ nhất, khi “continue” làm nội động từ thì nó mang nghĩa là “cái gì đó tiếp tục”. Ví dụ:
  • If the war continues, the world economy will seriously affect. (Nếu chiến tranh tiếp tục thì nền kinh tế thế giới sẽ ảnh hưởng nặng nề.)
  • If the rain continues, Jenny has to cancel tonight’s plans. (Nếu trận mưa vẫn tiếp tục, Jenny phải hủy kế hoạch tối nay)
• Thứ hai, khi “continue” làm ngoại động từ thì nó mang nghĩa là “tiếp tục cái gì/tiếp tục làm gì”. Ví dụ:
  • After a gap year, Kathy decided to continue her studies. (Sau khi dừng lại một năm, Kathy đã quyết định tiếp tục việc học của cô ấy.)
  • Sara who come from small towns move to big cities in order to continue her education after high school. (Sara đến từ thị trấn nhỏ chuyển lên thành phố để tiếp tục việc học của cô sau khi tốt nghiệp cấp 3).

Cấu trúc Continue trong tiếng Anh

1. Continue + V-ing và Continue + to V

Cấu trúc:

Continue + V-ing/to V: Tiếp tục làm gì

Lưu ý: Sau cấu trúc Continue dùng to V hay V-ing đều sẽ đều sẽ không thay đổi về mặt ngữ nghĩa. Ví dụ:

• Jenny thinks they will continue attacking each other. (Jenny nghĩ họ sẽ tiếp tục tấn công nhau.)
• Do you think Peter will continue to follow me? (Bạn có nghĩ John sẽ tiếp tục theo dõi tôi?)

2. Continue + danh từ

Cấu trúc:

Continue (with) + N: Tiếp tục điều gì

Ví dụ:

• Our team decided to continue the match. (Nhóm tôi quyết định tiếp tục trận đấu.)
• Anna wants to maintain and continue these shops. (Anna muốn duy trì và tiếp tục chuỗi cửa hàng này.)

3. Continue + tính từ

Cấu trúc Continue này thường không xuất hiện nhiều và chỉ đi được với một số tính từ nhất định mà thôi.

Continue + to be Adj: Tiếp tục thế nào

Ví dụ:

• Jenny has to continue to be strong! (Jenny phải tiếp tục mạnh mẽ lên!)
• This competition has continued unabated for over 30 minutes. (Cuộc đối đầu này đã tiếp tục không suy giảm trong 30 phút.)

Continue on/over/through + N	Tiếp tục di chuyển, băng qua	The road continues through the Hanoi city. (Con đường tiếp tục đi thành phố Hà Nội.)

Chú ý khi dùng cấu trúc Continue trong tiếng Anh

Khi sử dụng cấu trúc Continue thì bạn cần phải chú ý một số điểm sau để tránh những lỗi dùng sai đáng tiếc:

• Dạng tính từ của Continue là Continued (tiếp tục cái đã có) hoặc Continual (lặp lại nhiều lần) hoặc Continuous (liên tiếp không bị ngắt quãng). Ví dụ:
  • Harry seemed to need continual reassurance. (Harry dường như cần được trấn an liên tục.)
• Continual và Continuous có thể sử dụng nhằm thay thế cho nhau trong đa số các tình huống ngữ cảnh. Ví dụ:
  • Jenny was in continuous employment until the age of fifty-five. (Jenny đã làm việc liên tục cho đến năm mươi lăm tuổi.) = Jenny was in continual employment until the age of fifty-five.
• Cấu trúc Continue + to V/V-ing đi với to V hay Ving thì ý nghĩa đều không thay đổi. Ví dụ:
  • Kathy should continue working after the baby was born. (Kathy nên tiếp tục làm việc sau khi em bé chào đời.) = Kathy should continue to work after the baby was born.
• Động từ Continue luôn luôn ở dạng chủ động.
