Today, I’m going to tell you about my favorite volunteer experience at my university which was intriguing, memorable and eye-opening.
Well, as I can remember vividly, when I was a student, I did not stand many chances to do voluntary work because at the time, I was too focused on how to pass the exam.
Fortunately, 3 years ago, when I was just a sophomore, I was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part in a kinda start-up conference which was called Youth Colab Summit 2019 as a volunteer. More specifically, some of my classmates and I together took charge of guiding and welcoming delegates from Asia-Pacific countries as my university was the host partner of this event.
To be frank, the chief reason why I decided to give it a try was that I wanted to boost my English speaking and problem-solving skills since during the entire event, volunteers were required to communicate with delegates and others in English to support them.
Turning to that red-letter day, my small group whose name was 5 little ducks was assigned to take care of six representatives from Pakistan. It was the first time they had been to Vietnam and also the very first time we took up such a significant role, so it was unavoidable for us to face some unexpected problems.
However, in the end, the conference was a big success, and many of the delegates told us that they had been inspired by our energy, enthusiasm and supportiveness, which made us so proud, thankful and delighted.
I’d like to talk about a humanitarian medical program in which I joined as a voluntary interpreter. It was probably 2 years ago when I was going to graduate from university.
The program took place in A Luoi – a mountainous area of Hue where there were many ethnic people. It was held by a group of retired American doctors and nurses who used to serve in the Vietnam war. The program aimed to give free medical treatment and medicines to the ethnic people living in that area because they were so poor that they didn’t have money to go to the hospital. The American doctors and nurses obviously did not know any Vietnamese, so they needed someone like me who could speak both English and Vietnamese to help them communicate with the locals.
I participated in this program because I wanted to help those disadvantaged people. Besides, my major is Interpretation so that was a good chance for me to apply what I’ve learned into practice and get some practical experience. The project lasted for 2 weeks and every day, I had to get up at 5 a.m and went on a bus with the team to travel from the city center to that remote area. I’m not used to being an early bird, but the thought of helping people motivated me to get out of bed. I was interpreting for a nurse, and I also did other jobs as setting up and collecting equipment at the end of the day. During the program, many local people received our help to treat their illness. One child who had heart disease was also exempted from all the surgery cost. The decision to join this program is the best one I’ve ever made. I feel that I’ve done something meaningful for society and my community. After the program, I also learned many great things and improved my interpretation skills.
1. humanitarian medical program: chương trình y tế nhân đạo
/hjuːˌmæn.ɪˈteə.ri.ən/ /ˈmed.ɪ.kəl/ /ˈprəʊ.ɡræm/
Ví dụ: "That's when we stopped de-mining and the de-miners all went home and we switched our work to humanitarian medical programs," Mr. Willoughby said.
2. mountainous area /ˈmaʊn.tɪ.nəs/ /ˈeə.ri.ə/: vùng núi
Ví dụ: The shootings occurred in a poor, mountainous area.
3. apply what I've learned into practice: áp dụng những gì đã học vào thực hành
apply /əˈplaɪ/ : áp dụng
learn /lɜːn/ : Học
practice /ˈpræk.tɪs/ : thực hành
Ví dụ: I learnt a great deal and was then ready to go back to my job and apply what I had learned into practice.
early bird /ˈɜː.li ˌbɜːd/: người dậy sớm
Ví dụ: "Good morning, early bird!" Unni said.
There are numerous positive features that volunteers should have. However, I strongly believe that the most outstanding one is kindness. To be more specific, they should feel delighted when they are able to help those in need and partly contribute to a better community. On top of that, those who wish to do work voluntarily should also be selfless.
As a matter of fact, volunteer work does not bring people money, but instead volunteers might have to allocate not only their time and energy but sometimes their money to supporting others, so in order to accomplish their tasks, they should care about others’ well-being before theirs.
Yes, definitely. Despite technological advances and economic development, in this day and age, there are still a wide range of vexing problems that need to be coped with, which requires more volunteers. For instance, massive floods and long droughts take their toll each year, despoiling millions of tons of valuable crops and leaving millions of people suffering from starvation.
At the same time, wars and conflicts which have been taking place in several parts of the world force millions of people to leave their land and become refugees. Without those who voluntarily sacrifice their time and money for others, these victims would never be able to overcome their difficulties and those alarming social issues would never be mitigated.
Leading-edge technologies have a large number of positive impacts on humans’ lives, and volunteers along with voluntary activities are not an exception. Take long-distance donation as an example. Thanks to internet banking services facilitated by big data, an invention of the fourth industrial revolution, volunteers or those who are financially or physically disadvantaged can receive money from kind-hearted donors all over the world.
This was never the case in the past when people rarely had a chance to transfer to or obtain money from anyone far away from them.
