Mệnh đề quan hệ (Relative clause) là mệnh đề phụ dùng để nối với mệnh đề chính thông qua các đại từ quan hệ, trạng từ quan hệ. Mệnh đề quan hệ thường đứng sau các đại từ, danh từ nhằm bổ nghĩa và giải thích rõ hơn cho danh từ, đại từ đó.
Trong 1 câu, chủ ngữ (S) và tân ngữ (O) sẽ là các đại từ hoặc danh từ, do đó mệnh đề quan hệ sẽ đứng sau chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ.
S + (Đại từ quan hệ + S + V + O) + V + O
S + (Đại từ quan hệ/Tính từ quan hệ + V + O) + V + O
Ví dụ: The man who is working so hard is my boss (Người đàn ông người mà đang làm việc rất chăm chỉ là sếp của tôi).
=> Cụm: “who is working so hard” là mệnh đề quan hệ, bổ nghĩa cho chủ ngữ “the man”, để người đọc có thể hiểu người đàn ông đó là người nào và như thế nào.
S + V + O + (Đại từ quan hệ + S + V + O)
S + V + O + (Đại từ quan hệ + V + O)
Ví dụ: I really like the dress which my friend gave me for my 18th birthday. (Tôi thực sự rất thích chiếc váy mà bạn tôi tặng tôi vào sinh nhật năm 18 tuổi.)
=> Cụm: “which my friend gave me for my 18th birthday” là mệnh đề quan hệ, bổ nghĩa cho tân ngữ “the dress”, để người đọc có thể hiểu đó là chiếc váy nào.
Mệnh đề quan hệ được nối với mệnh đề chính bằng các đại từ quan hệ (who, whose, which, that hoặc trạng từ quan hệ (where, when, why).
Ví dụ: The man who lives next door works in a bank. (Người đàn ông sống bên cạnh làm việc tại một ngân hàng).
Trong ví dụ trên, mệnh đề quan hệ trong câu là “who lives next door”. Mệnh đề quan hệ này có chức năng bổ nghĩa cho “The man” đứng trước đó. Đại từ quan hệ được sử dụng trong câu là “who”.
Trong tiếng Anh, mệnh đề quan hệ được chia thành 2 loại, mệnh đề quan hệ xác định và mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định, mỗi loại có những đặc điểm riêng.

Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định là mệnh đề thường dùng để xác định danh từ đứng trước nó, đem đến ý nghĩa cho câu. Nếu thiếu nó thì câu sẽ không mang đủ nghĩa. Các đại từ quan hệ được sử dụng trong câu mệnh đề xác định.
Ví dụ:
- Do you know the name of the knitter who helped me pick up the shirt yesterday? (Bạn có biết tên của người đàn ông, người mà đã giúp tôi nhặt chiếc áo ngày hôm qua không?)
- The woman you met yesterday is the homeroom teacher of my class. (Người phụ nữ người mà bạn gặp hôm qua là giáo viên chủ nhiệm của lớp tôi.)
Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định là mệnh đề sử dụng nhằm cung cấp thêm thông tin về người, vật. Không có nó thì câu vẫn mang đầy đủ nghĩa.
Ví dụ:
- Ms. Lan, who taught me dance, is getting married next month. (Cô Lan, người mà dạy tôi múa chuẩn bị kết hôn vào tháng sau.)
- The movie, which I saw yesterday, is very good. (Bộ phim, cái mà tôi đã xem ngày hôm qua, rất hay.)
Đối với các mệnh đề quan hệ đóng vai trò là tân ngữ trong câu thì sẽ lược bỏ đại từ quan hệ, nếu có giới từ trước đại từ quan hệ thì đảo giới từ ra cuối mệnh đề.
Ví dụ:
- It is the best movie that my friend has ever seen -> It is the best movie my friend has ever seen.
Trong mệnh đề này, that đóng vai trò là tân ngữ của have seen, vì thế có thể lược bỏ that.
- I saw the boy whom my parents talked to yesterday -> I saw the boy my parents talked to yesterday.
Đối với mệnh đề này, whom cũng đóng vai trò làm tân ngữ của talk to nên có thể lược bỏ whom.
a. Rút gọn bằng cách dùng V-ing
Đối với trường hợp này, nếu mệnh đề quan hệ là mệnh đề chủ động thì sử dụng V-ing.
Ví dụ:

Nếu mệnh đề quan hệ là mệnh đề bị động thì rút thành cụm quá khứ phân từ (V3/ed).
Ví dụ:

Mệnh đề quan hệ được rút thành cụm động từ nguyên mẫu (To-infinitive) khi trước đại từ quan hệ có các cụm từ: the first, the second, the last, the only hoặc hình thức so sánh bậc nhất.
Ví dụ:
- John was the last person that got the news. -> John was the last person to get the news.
- He was the best player that we admire. -> He was the best player to be admired.
- He was the second man who was killed in this way. -> He was the second man to be killed in this way.
