Unless là gì?

Unless được sử dụng với ý nghĩa phủ định có nghĩa là trừ khi. Unless đồng nghĩa với If…not. Như If, Unless theo sau bởi một thì hiện tại, một quá khứ hoặc một quá khứ hoàn thành. Ví dụ:

• You can’t get a job unless you have experience (Bạn không thể kiếm được việc trừ khi bạn có kinh nghiệm)
• Unless you call me to say you are not coming, I will see you at the cantin (Trừ khi bạn gọi tôi nói rằng bạn không đến, thì tôi gặp bạn ở căng-tin)

Vị trí của mệnh đề Unless

Trong câu điều kiện ta không cần quan tâm đến mệnh đề trong câu. Mệnh đề chứa Unless có thể đứng trước hoặc sau mệnh đề chính. Ví dụ:

• Unless I pass the driving test, i can not have driving license (Nếu tôi không qua bài thi lái xe tôi không thể có giấy phép lái xe)

Cách sử dụng cấu trúc Unless

1. Cấu trúc Unless trong câu điều kiện

Câu điều kiện là loại phổ biến nhất ta có thể sử dụng Unless.

Có 3 loại câu điều kiện như sau:

Cấu trúc Unless trongcâu điều kiện loại 1: Cấu trúc Unless trong câu điều kiện loại 1 dùng để diễn tả sự việc có thể xảy ra trong tương lai. Unless và If not có thể thay thế được cho nhau. Cấu trúc:

Unless + S + V (thì hiện tại đơn), S + Will/Can/Shall + V

Ví dụ:

• We will fail the IELTS test unless you study hard (Chúng ta sẽ không vượt qua được bài thi IELTS trừ khi chúng ta học tập chăm chỉ.)
• We will fail the IELTS test if we do not study hard (Chúng ta sẽ trượt bài kiểm tra IELTS nếu chúng ta không học tập chăm chỉ.)

Cấu trúc Unless trong câu điều kiện loại 2: Cấu trúc Unless trong câu điều kiện loại 2 dùng để diễn tả một tình huống không thể xảy ra trong hiện tại. If not và Unless có thể thay thế được cho nhau. Cấu trúc:

Unless + S + Ved/V2 (Quá khứ đơn), S + would + V

Ví dụ:

• I would not be late for the bus unless I forgot his luggage (Tôi sẽ không bị trễ xe bus nếu tôi không để quên hành lý.)
• I would not be late for the bus if I didn’t forget his luggage (Tôi sẽ không bị trễ xe bus nếu tôi  không để quên hành lý.)

Cấu trúc Unless trong câu điều kiện loại 3: Cấu trúc Unless trong câu điều kiện loại 3 để diễn tả một tình huống đã không xảy ra trong quá khứ. Có thể sử dụng If not thay thế cho Unless và ngược lại. Cấu trúc:

Unless + S + had + Ved/V3, S + would + have + Ved/V3

Ví dụ:

• Unless Nam had walked in the rain yesterday afternoon, she would not have been sick.
• If Nam had not walk in the rain yesterday afternoon, she would not have been sick (Nếu Lan không đi bộ dưới cơn mưa vào chiều hôm qua, cô ấy đã không bị ốm.)

2. Cấu trúc Unless dùng để đề xuất ý kiến

Bạn có thể sử dụng cấu trúc Unless để đề xuất ý kiến, trong trường hợp này cần lưu ý là không được sử dụng If..not để thay thế Unless. Ví dụ:

• I’ll hang out with my friends – unless I’m tired (Tôi sẽ đi chơi với bạn của tôi trừ khi tôi mệt.)
• I will hang out with Nam – unless he invites me (Tôi sẽ đi chơi với Nam trừ khi anh ấy mời tôi.)

3. Cấu trúc Unless mang tính cảnh báo

Bạn có thể sử dụng cấu trúc Unless để nhấn mạnh hoặc thúc giục một hành động cần được thực hiện khẩn cấp, tránh hậu quả. Bạn có thể sử dụng If..not tuy nhiên sắc thái lại không bằng được Unless. Ví dụ:

• Unless Lan hurry up, he will be late the bus (Nếu Lan không khẩn trương lên thì anh ấy sẽ bị trễ xe bus).
• Unless Nam studies, she will fail the examination (Nếu Nam không chịu học tập chăm chỉ, cô ấy sẽ bị trượt kì thi).

4. Lưu ý khi sử dụng cấu trúc Unless

Sau đây là những lưu ý quan trọng giúp bạn sử dụng chính xác cấu trúc Unless:

• Unless đã mang sẵn ý nghĩa phủ định, vì thể Unless chỉ nên đi với câu khẳng định
• Unless = otherwise = If not
• Unless không bằng If not (lưu ý là if not viết liền). If not là câu điều kiện dạng ẩn ý. Người ta sử dụng câu điều kiện này khi đằng trước nó đã là một câu phủ định và dùng If not để tránh nhắc lại lần thứ 2 của vế phủ định này. Ví dụ: John won’t come tomorrow, if not, everything will become very difficult

Hướng dẫn viết lại câu với cấu trúc Unless

Dạng bài viết lại câu với Unless thường xuất hiện khá nhiều và đa dạng. Câu cho trước cho thể là câu cho sẵn if, cũng có thể là câu đảo ngữ hoặc là sử dụng các liên từ khác tương đương if hoặc là các câu điều kiện ẩn ý. 

Một mẹo hay để chinh phục dạng bài này là ta nên biến đổi câu theo 2 bước như sau:

• Bước 1: Biến đổi câu về dạng truyền thống (đi với If)
• Bước 2: Chuyển về Unless

Ví dụ: Study harder. Otherwise, you will fall the exam. (Học chăm chỉ hơn. Nếu không bạn sẽ trượt kỳ thi)

• Bước 1: Ta có thể chuyển về dạng truyền thống như sau: If you don’t study harder, you will fall the exam.
• Bước 2: Sau đó là chuyển về dạng chứa cấu trúc Unless: Unless you hurry up, you will be late.

Khi đã quen thuộc thì bạn có thể chuyển trực tiếp về Unless luôn. Một lưu ý nhỏ nữa là bạn hay hiểu rõ nghĩa của câu gốc. Sau đó khi viết lại câu, bạn check lại nghĩa của câu xem có giống với câu gốc không để đảm bảo không bị nhầm lẫn với những cấu trúc phức tạp.

Các lỗi thường gặp khi sử dụng cấu trúc Unless

Sau đây là một số lỗi các bạn thường gặp khi dùng Unless, hãy đọc thật kỹ để tránh những lỗi này nhé.

1. Sử dụng cấu trúc Unless trong dạng câu hỏi

Trong câu hỏi, bạn chỉ có thể sử dụng If not mà không thể dùng Unless để thay thế. Ví dụ: 

• What will happen if I do not do my homework tomorrow? ( Điều gì sẽ xảy ra nếu ngày mai tôi không làm bài tập?)

Không được dùng: What will happen unless I do my homework tomorrow?

2. Sử dụng will/would trong mệnh đề có Unless

Trong mệnh đề có Unless thì chúng ta không được sử dụng will hoặc would Ví dụ: 

• Unless you go to sleep soon, you will be exhausted (Nếu bạn không ngủ sớm, bạn sẽ kiệt sức)

Không được dùng: Unless you will go to sleep soon, you will be exhausted

3. Sử dụng khi diễn đạt ngữ nghĩa của If

Ta không thể sử dụng Unless để thay thế khi ta muốn trình bày câu mang ý nghĩa If. Ví dụ:

• I will help her if my sister can’t make it (Tôi sẽ giúp cô ấy nếu em gái tôi không thể làm nó).

Không sử dụng: I will help her unless my sister can’t make it 🠚 Không được sử dụng
