Otherwise là gì?

Otherwise có nghĩa là nếu không thì, Otherwise thường là liên từ, được sử dụng để diễn tả hai mệnh đề/ hai ý trái ngược nhau trong một câu. Ví dụ: 

• You should bring an umbrella, otherwise you will get wet. (Bạn nên đem theo một chiếc ô, nếu không bạn sẽ bị ướt.)
• You have to arrive at the office before 9:00 am, otherwise you will be punished. (Bạn phải đến văn phòng trước 9 giờ nếu không bạn sẽ bị phạt.)

Trong trường hợp Otherwise đóng vai trò như tính từ sẽ có nghĩa là “không như giả định” hoặc “khác”. Ví dụ:

• I don’t believe it, my boyfriend is quite otherwise after marriage. (Tôi không thể tin được, bạn trai của tôi hoàn toàn khác sau khi kết hôn). 
• She behaves otherwise when she is at home" (Cô ý cư xử khác hẳn khi ở nhà). 

Vị trí Otherwise trong câu 

1. Otherwise đứng giữa câu/hai mệnh đề 

Trong trường hợp cấu trúc otherwise được sử dụng như một liên từ (mang nghĩa là “nếu không thì") và một trạng từ (mang nghĩa “khác nhau, hoặc theo cách khác”), Otherwise đứng giữa 2 mệnh đề. Cấu trúc Otherwise đứng giữa câu/mệnh đề:

Clause 1 +, otherwise (liên từ) + Clause 2.

S + otherwise (trạng từ) + V + O.

Ví dụ:

• Eat ice cream now, otherwise it will be melted. (Ăn kem ngay đi, nếu không nó sẽ tan chảy.)
• Uncle Ho, otherwise known as the leader of Vietnam, is forever respected. (Bác Hồ, nói cách khác là vị lãnh tụ vĩ đại của Việt Nam, đời đời được tôn kính.)

2. Otherwise đứng cuối câu

Trong trường hợp là tính từ, Otherwise thường đứng cuối câu và được sử dụng để chỉ ra rằng một cái gì đó hoàn toàn khác với những gì bạn nghĩ hoặc từ những gì đã nêu trước đó. Cấu trúc Otherwise đứng cuối câu:

S + to be +  otherwise.

Ví dụ:

• Everyone thought he was a thief, he is otherwise. (Mọi người đều nghĩ anh ta là kẻ trộm, nhưng anh ta không phải.)
• People think she's happy but the truth is otherwise. (Mọi người đều nghĩa cô ấy hạnh phúc nhưng sự thật thì khác.)

Cách dùng cấu trúc Otherwise 

1. Cấu trúc Otherwise được sử dụng với vai trò là liên từ 

Otherwise trong câu được hiểu với nghĩa là “nếu không thì”, thường đứng ở vị trí nối giữa 2 mệnh đề. Ví dụ: 

• Don’t talk in the room, otherwise we will have to go out. (Đừng nói quá nhiều nếu không thì chúng ta sẽ phải ra ngoài.)
• You should do your homework, otherwise you will be punished. (Bạn nên làm bài tập về nhà, nếu không bạn sẽ bị phạt.)

2. Cấu trúc Otherwise được dùng như một tính từ 

Khi đóng vai trò là tính từ, Otherwise thường đứng ở vị trí cuối câu. Otherwise được sử dụng với nghĩa là “không như giả định, khác”. Otherwise trong trường hợp này được sử dụng với nghĩa thể hiện điều gì đó khác hoàn toàn với cách nghĩ hoặc những nhận định đã có trước đây. Ví dụ:

• She may say she's talented in the interview, but the truth is otherwise. (Cô ấy có thể nói mình là một người tài giỏi trong cuộc phỏng vấn, nhưng sự thật thì khác.)
• He says he loves you but it's otherwise. (Anh ta nói yêu bạn nhưng sự thật thì không phải vậy.)

3. Cấu trúc Otherwise được sử dụng như trạng từ

Với vai trò là trạng từ, otherwise có nghĩa là “về mọi mặt khác” hoặc “ngoại trừ điều vừa đề cập”. Thường sẽ đứng ở vị trí giữa câu. Trong trường hợp này, cấu trúc Otherwise = Apart from this và thường đi kèm với từ but. Ví dụ:

• This room has no balcony, but otherwise everything is fine. (Căn phòng này không có ban công, ngoại trừ việc đó ra thì mọi thứ đều tốt.)
• This dress is pretty, but otherwise it's too short. (Cái váy này rất xinh ngoại trừ việc nó quá ngắn.)

4. Sử dụng cấu trúc Otherwise trong câu điều kiện

Trong câu điều kiện, cấu trúc Otherwise được sử dụng như một liên từ, với nghĩa là: nếu không thì, dẫu sao thì, ngoài ra thì. Trong trường hợp giữa 2 mệnh đề trong câu, cần phải sử dụng dấu chấm hoặc dấu chấm phẩy khi sử dụng Otherwise. Đối với câu điều kiện loại 2 và câu điều kiện loại 3, mệnh đề sau otherwise phải lùi một thì. Ví dụ:

• I need to save up for my tuition fee, otherwise I would spend it on travelling to the Singapore for my bestfriend's birthday. (Tôi cần tiết kiệm để trang trải học phí, nếu không thì tôi sẽ dùng tiền đó đến Singapore dự sinh nhật của bạn thân tôi.)
• I travelled by plane, otherwise I would have missed the important event. (Tôi đã di chuyển bằng máy bay nếu không thì tôi đã lỡ 1 sự kiện quan trọng.)

Cấu trúc/cụm từ tương đương với cấu trúc Otherwise 

1. Unless tương đương cấu trúc Otherwise 

Unless là một liên từ trong tiếng Anh, được sử dụng để biểu thị điều kiện ngược lại hoặc điều kiện không xảy ra. Ví dụ: 

• Bring a raincoat. If you don’t, you will get wet = Unless you bring a raincoat, you will get wet. = Bring a raincoat, otherwise you will get wet. (Hãy đem theo áo mưa nếu không bạn sẽ bị ướt.)
• Unless you study, you will fail the exam = You should study, otherwise you will fail the exam. (Nếu bạn không học, bạn sẽ trượt kỳ thi.)

2. Or else tương đương cấu trúc Otherwise 

Or else có nghĩa là nếu không thì, nếu không, tương đương với nghĩa liên từ của Otherwise. Ví dụ: 

• Move now or else we'll miss our flight! = Move now otherwise we will miss our flight! ( Di chuyển ngay nếu không thì chúng ta sẽ lỡ chuyến bay!)
• Study hard or else you will miss the exam = Study hard otherwise you will miss the exam. (Hãy học hành chăm chỉ ngay đi nếu không thì bạn sẽ trượt kỳ thi.
