Giới từ (in - on - at) là gì?
Giới từ (Prepositions) là những từ chỉ sự liên quan giữa các bộ phận trong câu văn, giúp hiểu rõ hơn ý nghĩa và ngữ cảnh của cả câu.
Giới từ có thể là những từ chỉ thời gian, vị trí, sự di chuyển và quyền sở hữu…
Một số giới từ phổ biến như: in, on, at, to, about, among, of, over, into, within, up/down,...
- I went into the room.(Tôi đi vào trong phòng)
- At the time, I was sitting in the room. (Ngay lúc này, tôi đang ngồi trong phòng)
Đặc biệt, bộ ba giới từ “In”, “On”, “At” được sử dụng phổ biến nhất, thường đứng trước các từ chỉ thời gian, nơi chốn, có thể nằm ở đầu câu hoặc cuối câu.
Ví dụ:
- My mother is watching TV in the bedroom. (Mẹ tôi đang xem vô tuyến trong phòng ngủ)
- At that time, I was walking on the street after school. (Lúc đó, tôi đang đi dạo trên phố sau khi tan trường)
- David will see you at 3 p.m. (David sẽ gặp bạn lúc 3 giờ chiều nhé)
Dấu hiệu phân biệt IN ON AT như sau: IN được sử dụng cho các từ chỉ thời gian và địa điểm chung với phạm vi rộng, phạm vi này thu hẹp dần đối với ON và AT chỉ được sử dụng với những địa điểm hoặc thời gian cụ thể. Ví dụ:
- Anna will see you at 8PM. (Anna sẽ gặp bạn lúc 8 giờ tối.)
- At this time, Tom was cycling on the street after school. (Lúc đấy Tom đang đạp xe trên đường sau giờ học.)
- Jenny is watching TV in the living room. (Bà tôi đang xem TV trong phòng khách)
Cách phân biệt IN ON AT
1. Cách dùng giới từ IN
Để phân biệt IN ON AT thì bạn hãy nhớ IN là giới từ có phạm vi rộng nhất trong bộ ba đó. IN đi kèm với các từ chỉ thời gian và địa điểm thường mang tính chung và phổ quát.

In cũng có nghĩa là “ở bên trong”. Ví dụ: in the box (ở trong hộp), in the sea (ở trong lòng biển)… |

2. Cách dùng giới từ ON
Các phạm vi về địa điểm và thời gian đi cùng với giới từ ON thuộc tầm trung, rộng hơn với giới từ AT nhưng lại chi tiết hơn so với giới từ IN. Đó là cách phân biệt AT IN ON dựa trên phạm vi cơ bản.

3. Cách dùng của giới từ AT
Giới từ AT đi kèm với các từ chỉ thời gian và địa điểm có phạm vi nhỏ hẹp, mang tính chi tiết nhất, đó chính là cách phân biệt ON IN AT.

Mẹo nhớ IN ON AT trong tiếng Anh
Một số trường hợp đặc biệt phân biệt IN ON AT

| Thời gian | Trong những dịp lễ đặc biệt, một số trường hợp chúng ta dùng AT hoặc IN mang nghĩa chỉ cả dịp lễ kéo dài, còn với ON là chỉ một ngày/buổi cụ thể trong dịp đó. |

Với từ chỉ thời gian vào cuối tuần, ta có thể dùng đồng thời cả 3 giới từ IN ON AT đều được. Tuy nhiên, khi dùng giới từ AT sẽ không có mạo từ “the” kèm theo. |

Một số lưu ý khi dùng giới từ In, On, At trong tiếng Anh
- Giới từ “In” dùng để chỉ các buổi lớn trong ngày (in the morning, in the afternoon,…), trong khi giới từ “at” được dùng để chỉ những buổi ngắn chỉ kéo dài vài tiếng, xen kẽ giữa những buổi lớn (at noon, at night…).
- Khi nói về các kỳ nghỉ, cả hai giới từ “at” và “in” được dùng để chỉ cả dịp nghỉ lễ kéo dài (at Christmas Day, in Tet Holiday,…), trong khi giới từ “on” được dùng để chỉ ngày chính của dịp lễ (on Christmas day – đêm Giáng sinh, on New Year’s Eve – đêm giao thừa,..).
- Với từ chỉ cuối tuần, có thể dùng cả 3 giới từ “in”, “on”, “at”. Tuy nhiên nếu dùng giới từ “at” thì không có “the” (at weekend, on the weekend, in the weekend).
- Khi 3 giới từ “in”, “on”, “at” được dùng để chỉ cùng 1 địa điểm thì “in” sẽ chỉ ý nghĩa bên trong sự vật, “on” là trên bề mặt sự vật và “at” mang nghĩa thông báo ai đó đang ở địa điểm đó.
