Talking about Vietnamese holidays, I believe the Lunar New Year will always be the first to pop up in everyone’s mind. More than any other occasion, it is the most expected annual event by the Vietnamese everywhere in the world.
The Lunar New Year festival usually takes place somewhere in the last ten days of January or the first twenty days of February and lasts from 3 to 4 days. Vietnamese people have been celebrating this occasion for thousands of years and have made it an essential part of the Vietnamese tradition. Lunar New Year’s Eve is not only a special holiday but also a chance for family gatherings and intimate get-togethers.
Since it is the most important holiday of the year, people pay great attention to everything they do and say during this occasion. Some common plans include cleaning and decorating the house, buying new clothes, making “Chung” cake, making offers for the ancestors, giving out “lucky money”, visiting temples and pagodas… and so on.
For me in particular and Vietnamese people all around the world in general, the Lunar New Year has remarkable meanings. It may be the only occasion that all family members can gather and be happy while sharing great news and hoping for better things for the upcoming year.
Even though the modern lifestyle and the fast pace of life are shortening the Lunar New Year holiday, I do not think it will ever disappear as its significance is far too great in every Vietnamese’s heart.

Regarding national holidays, I would like to talk about the Vietnamese New year which is also known as “Tet”. Tet is a special occasion that is widely celebrated every year in Vietnam. In fact, it is undoubtedly the country’s most significant and highly anticipated celebration of the year.
Celebrated on the first day of the first month in the Lunar Calendar, Tet is the longest holiday which may last up to 2 weeks. However, due to the increasingly busy lifestyle of the new generation, this holiday is getting shorter every year.
The Vietnamese New Year bears multiple meanings. Not only does it mark the beginning of a new year, but it also carries the hope of washing away the hardship and failure of the previous year and opening a new year filled with good fortune and happiness. Therefore, Vietnamese people will start preparing to celebrate this festival a few weeks prior to the special day.
One of the most important tasks in the preparation process involves buying apricot flowers and peach flowers to decorate the house. They represent Spring and also a brand new start. I remembered me and my mom spending hours in the open market looking for the right peach flowers to bring home every year at Tet. I guess the old saying was right, “Tet is not Tet if there is no sight of Hoa Mai (south) or Hoa Dao (north) in every home.”
Tet is truly an important festival for each and every Vietnamese. As a tradition, we strongly believe that if we spend Tet properly with a smile on our faces, we may expect a more prosperous and favorable year.

I assume one of the most important holidays in Vietnam is the Lunar New Year, which occurs in late January and early February. The official Lunar New Year or Tet holiday is celebrated from the 31st of December till the 3rd of January according to the Lunar calendar. Nonetheless, the break is often extended to 5 or 7 days later and even longer for students.
Every year at this festival, people across the nation will come back to their hometowns and celebrate the occasion with their families and friends. Thus, only on these days are the streets in big metropolises like Saigon and Hanoi not filled with motorbikes during the daytime and the atmosphere turns rather quiet at night.
Since everyone believes that welcoming the new year with a positive attitude, a clean environment, and new things will surely guarantee a successful upcoming year, there is always a lot of buying and selling to do on the Tet holiday. In addition, cleaning the entire house is also an indispensable part of the holiday. Every place in the house must be squeaky clean and ready for the new year.
I think the reason why Vietnamese people treasure the Tet holiday so much is because the occasion gives everyone the chance to express their respect and remembrance for their ancestors as well as spend precious time with their beloved family members.
