OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The mission of WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme is to help countries, and to coordinate international action, to prevent, prepare for, detect, rapidly respond to, and recover from outbreaks and emergencies.

Description Of Duties

The incumbent will perform the following duties

  • Provide Technical insight in preparedness, response, and recovery to MOH and partners in emergencies and disasters.
  • Ensure that humanitarian health assistance is in line with international standards and local priorities by building the required capacities at the national level, aligning with the Asia-Pacific Health Security Action Framework (APHSAF).
  • Contribute effectively to the implementation of activities for prevention and control of disease outbreaks during and after emergency situations.
  • Manage information systems and timely dissemination of WHO updated information on a regular and prompt basis in disease surveillance especially in Disease early warning system.
  • Conduct regular assessment of health risks for affected population and recommend required strategies.
  • Work closely with MOH and other health stakeholders to ensure that updated information on affected population figures and their health status is readily available.
  • Arrange and compile materials for trainings and other capacity building activities related to surveillance and risk assessment for public health workers.
  • Participate in emergency epidemiological field missions and provide technical support in rapid response to public health emergencies, as required.

Required Qualifications

Education

Essential: Bachelor's degree (or higher) in preventive medicine, epidemiology, public health, or similar field from a recognized university.

Desirable: Sound understanding of emergency response.

Experience

Essential: At least one (1) year of relevant experience in epidemiology, surveillance and/or control of acute public health events; epidemic intelligence and risk assessment at the national levels.

Desirable: Relevant international exposure is an asset. Field experience in epidemiology, surveillance and/or control of acute public health events in sub-national level in Viet Nam. Field experience in the context of large epidemics or public health crisis. Experience in working with international organizations and/or governments.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and proactively

  • Good Knowledge of health sector activities in developing countries and/or in the context of emergency response relief, or preparedness for epidemic-prone diseases.
  • Good Knowledge of surveillance, field epidemiology and emerging diseases.

  • Willingness to be deployed at short notice in support of national and international emergency health interventions.
  • Tact, discretion and ability to promote consensus.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, with emphasis on writing skills.

REMUNERATION

Remuneration comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 36,105 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable) and 30 days of annual leave.
