Về bản chất, Which là một đại từ được sử dụng rất nhiều trong tiếng Anh, mang nghĩa là nào, cái gì hay những cái gì. Which thường xuất hiện trong câu hỏi với vai trò từ để hỏi và đứng đầu câu, hoặc xuất hiện trong một mệnh đề quan hệ.
Trong mệnh đề quan hệ, Which là đại từ quan hệ được sử dụng để thay thế cho danh từ chỉ sự vật, sự việc. Nó đảm nhiệm vai trò của chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ trong một câu. Chính vì vậy, sau which là một chủ ngữ hoặc động từ.
Which + S/ V
Ví dụ:
- The place to which I used to go for a walk is now a restricted area (Nơi mà tôi thường đến đi dạo giờ đã là một khu vực cấm).
- This girl showed me round the city, which was very kind of her (Cô gái ấy chỉ cho tôi vòng quanh thành phố, nơi rất tốt với cô ấy).
- The movie, which I saw last night, was very boring. (Bộ phim hôm qua tôi xem rất nhàm chán.)
Giống với Which, Where là một đại từ phổ biến trong tiếng Anh. Tuy nhiên nó khác với Which bởi mang nghĩa là ở đâu, ở một địa điểm nào. Where cũng xuất hiện trong phần đầu của một câu hỏi với chức năng là từ để hỏi, và cũng có thể được sử dụng trong một mệnh đề quan hệ.
Đại từ quan hệ where trong một mệnh đề quan hệ có chức năng thay thế cho một danh từ chỉ nơi chốn. Theo sau where luôn là một mệnh đề.
Where + mệnh đề
Ví dụ:
The place where I used to go for a walk is now a restricted area (Nơi mà tôi thường đến đi dạo giờ đã là một khu vực cấm).
My mom like to have dad next to her where my mom can keep an eye on him (Mẹ tôi thích có bố bên cạnh để mẹ tôi có thể để mắt đến ông ấy).
Cấu trúc:
… N (thing) + which + V + O
… N (thing) + which + S + V
Ví dụ:
- The PC which keeps breaking down is under guarantee until March (Chiếc máy tính mà suốt ngày hỏng đó vẫn đang còn hạn bảo hành đến tận tháng 3).
- The pair of shoes which she lost cost her a fortune to buy (Đôi giày mà cô ấy làm mất đã khiến cô ấy tốn rất nhiều tiền để mua).
Lưu ý: Khi which thay thế cho một tân ngữ, bạn có thể lược bỏ nó trong câu. Ví dụ: The bicycle (which) her father bought a few months ago is very useful now. (Cái xe đạp bố cô ấy mua vài tháng trước hiện giờ rất hữu ích).
Cấu trúc:
… N (place) + where + S + V
Ví dụ:
Texas is the place where I would like to visit (Texas là nơi mà tôi muốn đến thăm).
Ha returned to her hometown where she was born and raised (Hà quay trở về quê nhà của mình nơi mà cô ấy sinh ra và lớn lên).
Từ định nghĩa và cấu trúc kèm ví dụ bên trên, có thể dễ dàng chỉ ra cách phân biệt which và where trong mệnh đề quan hệ như sau:

Lưu ý: Khi which và where cùng được sử dụng với mục đích chỉ nơi chốn, ta có:
- Sau where luôn là một mệnh đề. Ví dụ: This is the library where we first met (Đây là thư viện nơi chúng tôi gặp nhau lần đầu tiên).
- Which được đặt sau một giới từ (from, on, at, in…) và sau which cũng là một mệnh đề. Ví dụ: This is the library at which we first met (Đây là thư viện nơi chúng tôi gặp nhau lần đầu tiên).
- Thông thường, cấu trúc preposition + which mang hàm ý khiến câu văn chính xác và trịnh trọng hơn so với where.

| where the action is | Nơi tràn đầy nhựa sống, nơi phù hợp để làm gì | My grandmother lives in Da Lat. She can tell us where the action is (Bà tôi sống ở Đà Lạt. Bà có thể nói với chúng tôi đây là nơi tràn đầy nhựa sống). |
| where there’s a will there’s a way | Có chí thì nên | Don’t tell me it’s impossible. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. And we’re going to find that way (Đừng bảo tôi điều đó là không thể. Có chí thì nên. Và chúng ta sẽ tìm ra cách thôi). |
| where there’s muck there’s brass | Ở đâu có bùn, ở đó có đồng | When they saw his enormous house and flash car they looked at each other, both thinking ‘Where there’s muck there’s brass.’ (Khi họ nhìn thấy ngôi nhà khổng lồ và chiếc xe hơi chớp nhoáng của anh ấy, họ nhìn nhau, cả hai đều nghĩ “ở đâu có bùn ở đó có đồng”. |

Ex 3. Điền từ thích hợp vào chỗ trống:
