Hold down là gì?

“Hold down” là một cụm động từ đa nghĩa trong tiếng Anh và ý nghĩa phổ biến nhất của phrasal verb “hold down” đó là dùng để mô tả cho hành động “giữ chặt và ngăn không cho ai đó/điều gì đó di chuyển hoặc trốn thoát”. 

Với cách dùng này, theo sau “hold down” có thể là danh từ/cụm danh từ chỉ người (someone) hoặc chỉ sự vật, sự việc (something). Cấu trúc chi tiết như sau:

S + hold down + someone/something + …

S + hold + someone/something + down + … 

Ví dụ: 

• The police had to hold down the suspect to prevent him from escaping. (Cảnh sát phải giữ chặt nghi phạm để anh ta không trốn thoát.)
• He held down the lid to prevent the box from opening. (Anh ta giữ chặt nắp để ngăn chiếc hộp mở ra.)

Cấu trúc với Hold down 

Ngoài cấu trúc trên, hold down khi đi kèm riêng với someone hay something và trong các ngữ cảnh khác nhau cũng sẽ mang đến ý nghĩa khác nhau. Vậy “hold down” còn có thể được dùng với những cách nào khác? Cùng theo dõi sau đây.

• ​To prevent somebody from having their freedom or rights
• Ý nghĩa: Ngăn ai đó có được sự tự do hoặc quyền cá nhân của họ 

Ví dụ: The manager's strict rules held down the employees' creativity. (Những quy định nghiêm ngặt của quản lý đã ngăn cản sự sáng tạo của nhân viên.)

2. Hold down ↔ something 

S + hold down + something + …

S + hold + something + down + … 

• To keep something at a low level
• Ý nghĩa: Giữ cho điều gì đó nằm ở một mức thấp, không để nó tăng lên, chẳng hạn như giá cả.

Ví dụ: The government is trying to hold down inflation. (Chính phủ đang cố gắng kiềm chế lạm phát.)

•  To limit something, especially a noise
• Ý nghĩa: Giới hạn điều gì đó, chẳng hạn như tiếng ồn.

Ví dụ: Please hold down the noise, I'm trying to study. (Làm ơn giảm tiếng ồn đi, tôi đang cố gắng học bài.)

Lưu ý: Tất cả các cấu trúc với “hold down” sẽ không thay đổi ý nghĩa khi di chuyển linh hoạt vị trí của danh từ đứng giữa hoặc sau cụm động từ.

• Pin down

Ví dụ: The wrestler pinned down his opponent. (Đô vật đã giữ chặt đối thủ của mình.)

• Keep down 

Ví dụ: He helps me keep the dog down while I open the gate. (Anh ấy giúp tôi giữ con chó lại trong khi tôi mở cổng.)

• Clamp down

Ví dụ: The mechanic clamped down the piece of metal to work on it. (Thợ cơ khí giữ chặt miếng kim loại để làm việc.)

• Anchor down 

Ví dụ: The sailors anchored down the boat to keep it from drifting away. (Các thủy thủ đã neo chặt thuyền để nó không trôi đi.)

2. Đồng nghĩa với “giữ ở mức thấp” 

• Bring down 

Ví dụ: The government is trying to bring down inflation. (Chính phủ đang cố gắng giảm lạm phát.)

• Cut back

Ví dụ: I think we need to cut back on expenses. (Tôi nghĩ chúng ta cần giảm bớt chi tiêu.)

• Scale back 

Ví dụ: We had to scale back our plans due to budget constraints. (Chúng tôi phải giảm quy mô kế hoạch do hạn chế ngân sách.)

• Hold back 

Ví dụ: Back-up solution were made to hold back rising costs. (Biện pháp dự phòng đã được thực hiện để ngăn chặn chi phí tăng cao.)

3. Đồng nghĩa “giới hạn tiếng ồn”

• Quiet down 

Ví dụ: The teacher asked the students to quiet down. (Giáo viên yêu cầu học sinh giữ yên lặng.)

• Turn down 

Ví dụ: Could you turn down the music? It's too loud. (Bạn có thể giảm âm lượng của nhạc xuống không? Nó quá to.)

• Cut down 

Ví dụ: R&D team are busy to research some measures to cut down the noise’s product. (Đội Nghiên cứu và phát triển đang bận rộn để nghiên cứu một vài biện pháp để giảm tiếng ồn của sản phẩm này.)

• Tone down

Ví dụ: He needs to practice to tone down his loud voice. (Anh ấy cần giảm giọng nói to của mình.)
