Provided that là gì?

Theo từ điển Longman, provided that là một conjunction - liên từ được định nghĩa là "used to say that something will only be possible if something else happens or is done", tạm dịch là được dùng để nói thứ gì đó chỉ sẽ xảy ra nếu một thứ khác xảy ra hoặc được thực hiện và theo từ điển Cambridge, liên từ này được định nghĩa đơn giản là "if, only if" (nếu như, chỉ trong trường hợp là).

Ví dụ: We can hang out tonight, provided that it does not rain

Chúng ta sẽ có thể đi chơi tối nay nếu trời không mưa

Cấu trúc và cách dùng Provided that

Cấu trúc:

Ví dụ: Provided that parents do not control their children in using smartphones, their academic performance and health will be affected negatively

Nếu cha mẹ không kiểm soát việc trẻ em dùng điện thoại thông minh, kết quả học tập và sức khỏe của chúng sẽ bị ảnh hưởng nặng nề

Các lưu ý với cấu trúc "provided that"

• Khi mệnh đề chính đứng sau mệnh đề bổ nghĩa với Provided that, cần có dấu phẩy (,) ở giữa 2 mệnh đề.
• Các cụm "provided", "providing " và provided that cũng có chức năng và cách dùng như cụm "provided that" Tuy nhiên, “providing (that)” được sử dụng nhiều hơn trong văn nói, còn “provided (that)” được sử dụng nhiều hơn trong văn viết vì tính chất trang trọng hơn.
• Với nghĩa là "nếu như, trong trường hợp là", provided that có thể thay thế cả về mặt nghĩa và ngữ pháp cho "if" trong câu điều kiện loại I và chỉ trong câu điều kiện loại I

Ví dụ: Trong hai câu sau, "If" và "provided that" có thể hoàn toàn thay thế cho nhau

Provided that the government does not take action to protect the environment, humans' lives will be threatened.

(Nếu chính phủ không hành động để bảo vệ môi trường, cuộc sống của con người sẽ bị đe dọa)

Các cụm từ khác cũng có nghĩa tương đương với Provided that

Supposing that/Suppose that

Supposing that/Suppose that có nghĩa là: giả sử là.

Đây là cấu trúc gần như có thể thay thế hoàn toàn cho "provided (that) và providing (that) trong câu điều kiện loại I. Tuy nhiên khác với "provided that", thì Supposing that/Suppose that có thể được dùng trong cả 3 loại câu điều kiện

Ví dụ:

Supposing that it rains, can we go to the cinema? (Câu điều kiện loại I)

Giả sử trời mưa, liệu chúng ta có đi xem phim được không?

Supposing I had a 6.5 IELTS certificate now, I would definitely study aboad (Câu điều kiện loại II)

Giả sử bây giờ tôi đã có chứng chỉ IELTS 6.5, tôi chắc chắn sẽ đi du học

Supposing I failed the exam last week, my mom might have been angry and disappointed. (Câu điều kiện loại III)

Giả sử tôi trượt kỳ thi tuần trước, mẹ tôi có thể sẽ tức giận và thất vọng.

As long as/So long as

Hai cụm từ này đều có nghĩa là: miễn là, chỉ cần. Tuy nhiên, "So long as” sử dụng sẽ trang trọng hơn so với “as long as”.

Ví dụ 1: 

As long as you finish your homework, I will let you play games

Miễn là con hoàn thành bài tập về nhà, mẹ sẽ để con chơi game (ngầm hiểu là trong ngữ cảnh giao tiếp)

Ví dụ 2: 

Cutting down trees would be permitted so long as campaigns that encourage people to plant more trees are conducted afterwards 

Chặt cây sẽ được phép miễn là có các chiến dịch khuyến khích mọi người trồng nhiều cây hơn được tiến hành sau đó (văn IELTS Writing Task 2 - văn trang trọng)

In case

“In case” có nghĩa là "trong trường hợp" và được dùng khi muốn nói về những việc nên làm để chuẩn bị cho một khả năng trong tương lai.

Ví dụ:

In case I forget, please remind me of my promise

Nếu tôi có quên thì nhắc tôi về lời hứa của tôi nhé
Trong ví dụ này, người nói muốn truyền đạt rằng, nếu sau này (trong tương lai) mà anh/cô ta có quên lời hứa, thì hãy nhắc anh/cô ấy.
