Cách xác định trọng âm trong từ có 2 âm tiết

• Quy tắc thứ 1: Đa số các động từ có 2 âm tiết thì trọng âm chính được nhấn vào âm tiết thứ 2. Ví dụ: attract /əˈtrækt/, become /bɪˈkʌm/, destroy /dɪˈstrɔɪ/.
• Quy tắc thứ 2: Đa số các danh từ và tính từ có 2 âm tiết thì trọng âm chính được nhấn vào âm tiết thứ nhất. (hiện text). E.g.: speaker /ˈspiː.kər/ language /ˈlæŋ.ɡwɪdʒ/, pretty /ˈprɪt.i/.
• Quy tắc thứ 3: Một số từ vừa mang nghĩa danh từ hoặc động từ thì: Nếu là danh từ trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ nhất. Nếu đó là động từ thì trọng âm nhấn vào âm tiết thứ 2. Ví dụ: Record (v) /rɪˈkɔːrd/: ghi âm; (n) /ˈrek.ɚd/: bản ghi âm; Present (v) /prɪˈzent/:thuyết trình ; (n) /ˈprez.ənt/: món quà; Produce (v) /prəˈduːs/ sản xuất; (n) /ˈprɑː.duːs/: nông sản. Ngoại lệ: visit /ˈvɪz.ɪt/, travel /ˈtræv.əl/, promise /ˈprɑː.mɪs/, …: trọng âm thường luôn nhấn vào âm tiết thứ nhất; reply /rɪˈplaɪ/, …: trọng âm luôn rơi vào âm thứ 2.
• Quy tắc thứ 4: Trọng âm không ưu tiên rơi vào âm /ɪ/ và không bao giờ rơi vào âm /ə/. Ví dụ: Result /rɪˈzʌlt/, effect /ɪˈfekt/ dù là danh từ nhưng trọng âm rơi 2 do âm tiết 1 đều là /ɪ/; Offer /ˈɒf.ər/, enter /ˈen.tər/, listen /ˈlɪs.ən/ dù là động từ 2 âm tiết nhưng trọng âm lại rơi vào âm tiết đầu tiên, do âm tiết thứ 2 đều là /ə/.

Cách xác định trọng âm trong từ có 3 âm tiết

• Quy tắc thứ 1: Hầu hết các từ tận cùng là đuôi; IC, ICS, IAN, TION, SION thì trọng âm rơi vào âm liền kề trước nó. Ví dụ: decision /dɪˈsɪʒ.ən/, exotic /ɪɡˈzɒt.ɪk/, electrician /ˌɪl.ekˈtrɪʃ.ən/,…
• Quy tắc thứ 2: Hầu hết các từ tận cùng là các đuôi: ADE, EE, ESE, EER, OO, IQUE thì trọng âm nhấn vào chính các âm này. Ví dụ: Japanese /ˌdʒæp.ənˈiːz/, refugee /ˌref.juˈdʒiː/, kangaroo /ˌkæŋ.ɡəˈruː/,…
• Quy tắc thứ 3: Hầu hết các từ tận cùng là: AL, FUL, Y thì trọng âm nhấn vào âm tiết thứ 3 từ dưới lên. Ví dụ: mineral /ˈmɪn.ər.əl/, plentiful /ˈplen.tɪ.fəl/, capability /ˌkeɪ.pəˈbɪl.ə.ti/,…
