Direct Answer + Additional information (What/Why/When/Who/How)
Q1: Are there many street markets in Vietnam?
Well, going to the street markets has been part and parcel of Vietnamese daily lives, so you can spot them almost anywhere, from the corners of villages to the heart of big cities.
Q2: Do you like street markets?
Absolutely yes. I love wandering around open-air markets for hours to buy all kinds of stuff, from locally grown produce to clothing items, which are mostly reasonably priced. Besides, you can easily get a good bargain if you know how to haggle over the prices.
No, shopping at street markets is not my thing since most products here can be sold at an inflated price if you don’t know how to haggle for them. Besides, these markets are often too crowded that I have to squeeze through the narrow aisles to get to my destination, which I find really annoying.
Q3: What do street markets sell?
There are plenty of products on offer at these open-air markets, ranging from fresh produce to clothing items. Most of them are sold at flexible prices, so you can feel free to make a bargain with vendors.
Q4: What are the differences between street markets and supermarkets?
There are some stark contrasts between street markets and supermarkets. First, the prices at the street market are often flexible so you can haggle for any products while goods at supermarkets are only offered at fixed prices. Additionally, sellers at supermarkets are often more friendly and supportive than market vendors.
Q5: Do you prefer shopping at the street market or at the shopping mall?
Well, I would say that I prefer visiting the street market as they are often within walking distance from my house. Besides, vendors there often sell all kinds of stuff at much lower prices than those in the shopping mall.

Today, I’d like to talk about Quang Ba Flower Market, which I had a chance to visit two years ago. At that time, I was still a second year student in Hanoi, and along with a couple of friends, I went there to let off steam after a stressful semester and to have a unique shopping experience.
Quang Ba is a night market, which is located just a few kilometers from the Central of Hanoi. The market has been renowned as the paradise of flowers where numerous sources of international and domestic flowers are supplied for retail vendors, and also as a famous destination for foreign tourists. As it only opens at night from 11 p.m, so we had to stay up all night before getting there. I still vividly remember the moment we entered the market, which was just 2 o’clock in the morning, as we were immediately overwhelmed with rows of colourful flowers stretching along the narrow shopping aisles. There were white daisies, pink cherry blossoms, scarlet roses and yellow sunflowers, all sold at relatively affordable prices, so we couldn’t help but buy bunches of them and also a skillfully arranged bouquet. We also took plenty of photos with the fully blossoming and gorgeous flowers in the background while wandering for hours from stalls to stalls. Only one or two hours later, the market quickly got packed with throngs of vendors and retailers negotiating over the prices, which made the bustling atmosphere typical of any Vietnamese markets. Only when the sun rose did we return, feeling extremely satisfied with our experience.
So, that’s our unforgettable trip and ever since I have recommended it as a must-visit for anyone who’s in Hanoi, especially flower enthusiasts or an extremely early morning riser like us. If I have a chance, I will definitely return to the market a second time.

Q1: Do you like shopping online or going out shopping?
Well, I prefer shopping online for several reasons. Firstly, it's a more convenient way of shopping as all I need to make a purchase is just a smartphone or laptop connected to the Internet. This saves a great deal of travel time and cost. Additionally, I can get access to a broad selection of products from thousands of stores across the country within a few clicks, while there are only a few options of offline stores in my neighborhood.
Q2: What is the difference between shopping with friends and shopping alone?
Shopping with friends is for sure funnier than shopping alone. You can discuss the latest trends of clothing and footwear with them, take some photos while you shop or get some useful advice from them about which styles to choose. Meanwhile, shopping alone means you have to rely on your own judgements and make your own decisions, which sometimes leads to an unwise choice of items.
Q3: What are the disadvantages of shopping in a big mall?
In large shopping malls, it’s unlikely to get any kind of advice or instruction about a product, and you have to rely on your own judgement when making a purchase.
Meanwhile, at smaller shops or at the street markets, the sellers are more than willing to show you details about their goods to draw your attention. Another disadvantage is that most major shopping centers are located in the suburbs, so it’s only possible to go by car.
