Cấu trúc song song là gì?

Cấu trúc song song (Parallel Structure) là câu có chứa hai hoặc nhiều thành phần hoặc mệnh đề có những cấu trúc ngữ pháp giống với nhau. Ví dụ về cấu trúc song song: 

• My younger sister likes dancing, swimming and jumping ropes. (Em gái của tôi thích nhảy, bơi và nhảy dây.)
• Adam says his new girlfriend is pretty, lovely and mature. (Adam nói rằng người bạn gái mới của anh ấy xinh đẹp, đáng yêu và trưởng thành.)

Quy luật sử dụng cấu trúc song song trong tiếng Anh

1. Sử dụng với liên từ kết hợp

Liệt kê là dạng thức dễ nhất của Parallel Strucutre - cấu trúc song song. Các bạn sẽ thường không gặp phải nhiều khó khăn khi đảm bảo các nội dung song song với nhau. Tuy nhiên, khi nối các mệnh đề được tạo bởi liên từ tạo thành câu văn dài, thí sinh thường sẽ rất dễ quên mất dạng từ đầu tiên mình dùng là gì.

Liên từ kết hợp

Ví dụ 1: She is pretty but tall. → Đây là một ví dụ dễ bởi vì sau động từ to be có từ pretty, vì vậy ta nhận biết được ngay phía sau ta phải dùng là một tính từ là tall.

Ví dụ 2: Mary Jane likes jogging, running, and to dance. → Trong ví dụ này hẳn các bạn sẽ nhận ra được điểm “sai sai” ở đây có phải không nào? Đúng là vậy, khi có hai động từ phía trước sử dụng Ving (jogging, running) còn động từ cuối cùng lại không theo đúng dạng ngữ pháp Ving (to dance → dancing).

2. Sử dụng với những liên từ tương quan

Những liên từ tương hỗ mà ta có thể hay gặp đi cùng với cấu trúc song song bao gồm: not only…, and…, or…, neither…, nor…, but also…., both…, either…

Ví dụ 1: She speaks English not only fluently but also naturally. (Cô ấy nói tiếng Anh không chỉ thành thạo mà còn tự nhiên.)

Ví dụ 2: It was both a long ceremony and very tedious. → Ở đây sau to be thì mình dùng adjectives để mô tả buổi lễ này, vậy cách dùng đúng là: The ceremony was both long and tedious.

3. Cấu trúc so sánh

Bên cạnh những liên từ tương quan, cấu trúc song song cũng được sử dụng với các liên từ so sánh. Những cấu trúc so sánh như so sánh bằng as … as hay so sánh hơn – comparative – bản chất cũng đã là một cấu trúc song song.

Ví dụ 1: The language skills of the students in the morning class are the same as those of the students in the evening class. (Các kỹ năng ngoại ngữ của các bạn học sinh lớp buổi sáng tương tự với kỹ năng của các bạn lớp buổi tối.)

Ví dụ 2: “My income is smaller than my wife.” → Nếu nhìn qua về ngữ nghĩa thì câu này có vẻ đúng: Thu nhập của tôi ít hơn của vợ tôi. Tuy nhiên, tiếng Anh không như tiếng Việt. Ở đây, rõ ràng 2 đối tượng so sánh không đồng nhất với nhau “my income” và “my wife”. Do đó, câu đúng phải là “My income is smaller than my wife’s” (Thu nhập của tôi thấp hơn của vợ tôi). 

Bài tập cấu trúc song song

Bài 1: Đánh dấu chữ cái A, B, C hoặc D trên phiếu trả lời của bạn để chỉ ra phần gạch chân cần chính xác trong mỗi câu hỏi sau.

1. Sleeping (A), resting, and to drink (B) orange juice (C) are the best ways (D) to care for a cold.

2. The trapdoor spider makes (A) a hole in (B) the ground, lines it with silk (C) and closing it (D) with a hinged door.

3. I like travelling (A) by air because (B) it is fast, safe (C), and it is convenience (D). 

4. You should stop wasting (A) your free time and doing (B) something (C) useful instead (D). 

5. After he had researched his paper and wrote it (A), he found (B) some additional (C) data that he should have included (D).

6. Perhaps (A) the most popular (B) film in the movie history (C), Star Wars, was written and direction (D) by George Lucas. 

Đáp án: 

1. B. Drinking → Giải thích: Chúng ta thấy một loạt động từ sleeping, resting, và to drink, chúng lại được nối với nhau bằng and. Tuy nhiên, to drink đang ở khác dạng Ving, nên ta sửa lại thành drinking.

2. D. Closes → Giải thích: Chúng ta  thấy có các động từ là makes, lines và closing, cũng xuất hiện liên từ and. Tuy nhiên closing đang ở khác dạng, mà động từ này cũng là thuộc về chủ ngữ the trapdoor spider. Thế nên ta sửa closing thành closes.

3. D. convenience → Giải thích: Chúng ta thấy chủ ngữ của mệnh đề sau because là it, to be là is, và sau to be có tính từ fast, safe. Thì sau liên từ and cũng cần 1 tính từ. Ta đổi it is convenience thành convenient. Đây cũng là một lỗi mà nhiều bạn học writing hay mắc phải, nguyên nhân là do dịch tiếng Việt ra thấy hợp lý, nhưng về ngữ pháp thì lại hơi cồng kềnh và không đúng theo cấu trúc song song.

4. B. and do → Giải thích: Bạn nên dừng việc lãng phí thời gian và làm gì đó hữu ích hơn đi. Stop và Do đang cùng 1 chức năng, vậy nên mình cũng cần chia theo cùng dạng. Sau should là động từ nguyên thể, stop đúng dạng động từ nguyên thể rồi, nhưng doing thì sai mất. Vậy mình sửa doing thành do.

5. A. written → Giải thích: Mình có dạng had + Vpii ở câu này, had researched đúng rồi, nhưng wrote thì lại đang không đúng dạng Vpii. Sửa cho cô wrote thành written. Sau khi anh ấy đã nghiên cứu và viết xong bài nghiên cứu đó, anh ấy tìm thấy thêm 1 số thông tin mà đáng lẽ anh ấy đã nên thêm vào. Đố 1 chút này, tại sao vế đầu tiên After he had researched… lại cần dùng thì quá khứ hoàn thành? Bởi lẽ đây là hành động xảy ra trước việc he found some additional data.

6. D. directed → Giải thích: Câu cuối cùng, the most popular … star wars, nghe hơi dài nhưng đây mới chỉ là chủ ngữ thôi nè,... was written and direction … Đáp án ta cần chọn là direction. Đây là cấu trúc câu bị động, bộ phim Star Wars đã được written và directed bởi … Trong câu bị động thì sau to be ta cần quá khứ phân từ, direction sửa thành directed. Written và directed được nối với nhau vởi liên từ and, chúng có cùng chức năng nên cũng cần chia cùng dạng.

Bài 2: Viết lại những câu sau sử dụng cấu trúc song song để truyền tải rõ nghĩa hơn

1. Eggs contain not only protein but are also full of vitamins. 

………………………………………………………………………………………..

2. They are low in sodium but do not have many calories. ………………………………………………………………………………………..

3. Eggs, however, are high in cholesterol and rather fat filled.

………………………………………………………………………………………..

4. The yolk of one egg contains 213 milligrams of cholesterol and there are 5 grams of fat.

5. Still, the whites are both fat-free and have no cholesterol.

Đáp án:

1. Eggs contain not only protein but also vitamins.

Bài 3: Chia loại từ phù hợp trong các chỗ trống

1. Not only does she enjoy ………. (read) novels, but she also likes ………. (view) films and listening to music in her leisure time. 

2. We can opt to either ………. (dine) at the bistro, ………. (prepare) a meal at home or ………. (order) takeout for lunch.

=> Giải thích: Sau like sẽ là V-ing, kết hợp với cấu trúc song song, các động từ liệt kê theo sau like đều phải V-ing.

2. watching, cooking

=> Giải thích: Sau enjoy là V-ing, kết hợp với cấu trúc song song của những liên từ tương quan nên sau both sẽ là 2 động từ V-ing.

3. reading, watching, listening

=> Giải thích: Sau finds là V-ing, cấu trúc not only, but also là dấu hiệu của cấu trúc song song nên các động từ sau find đều phải V-ing.

4. Dine, cook, order

=> Giải thích: Sau finds là V-ing, cấu trúc not only, but also là dấu hiệu của cấu trúc song song nên các động từ sau find đều phải V-ing.

5. developing, improving, expanding

=> Giải thích: Sau focus on là V-ing. Nội dung câu trên đang liệt kê những thứ mà công ty cần tập trung vào. Vì vậy, theo cấu trúc song song, ta cần thêm V-ing vào các từ được liệt kê.

=> Giải thích: Trong câu này, sau enjoy sẽ là Ving nên các hành động được liệt kê phía sau cần phải thêm -ing để đồng nhất các động từ trong cấu trúc câu song song.

2. going to Rome → Rome

=> Giải thích: Trong câu này, tác giả đang liệt kê những nơi muốn đi, tất cả đều là danh từ nhưng going to Rome là đi đến Roma (có động từ go). Vì vậy, cần phải lược bỏ đi going to để đồng nhất các danh từ trong câu liệt kê

3. Bỏ furniture 

=> Giải thích: Trong câu, đang liệt kê các danh từ đếm được, furniture là danh từ không đếm được nên bạn cần loại bỏ đi từ này.

4. making → make

=> Giải thích: Trong câu, sau to là các động từ được liệt kê theo dạng Vo nên making cần phải sửa thành make để đồng nhất các động từ trong cấu trúc song song.

5. to play → playing

=> Giải thích: Trong câu, sau include là liệt kê các động từ theo dạng Ving. Để đồng nhất các động từ trong cấu trúc song song, cần phải sửa to play thành playing.

Bài 9: Chọn đáp án sai và sửa lại
