Cấu trúc When là gì?
When có nghĩa là “khi, trong khi, lúc, trong lúc”.
Cấu trúc When dùng để nói về sự việc, hành động, tình huống đang diễn ra trong cùng tại 1 thời điểm.
Cấu trúc When được sử dụng nhiều ở trong các mệnh đề với vị trí là liên từ chỉ thời gian, When có thể đứng ở giữa hai mệnh đề để liên kết, hoặc có thể đứng ngay đầu mệnh đề chính nhưng hai mệnh đề ngăn cách nhau bởi dấu phẩy (,). Mệnh đề có chứa When là mệnh đề được bổ sung ngữ nghĩa cho mệnh đề chính. Ví dụ:
- When Jenny gets to school early, she won’t be penalized. (Khi Jenny đến trường sớm, cô ấy sẽ không bị phạt.)
- When Hanna wake up, her mother made breakfast for her. (Khi Hanna thức dậy, mẹ cô ấy làm bữa sáng cho cô ấy.)
Cách dùng và cấu trúc When trong tiếng Anh
1. Cách dùng cấu trúc When trong tiếng Anh
- Cấu trúc When thông thường sẽ dùng để nói về hai hành động đồng thời đang xảy ra trong một thời gian ngắn. Ví dụ: Jenny was shocked when I told her the truth. (Jenny đã choáng váng khi tôi kể cho cô ta nghe về sự thật.)
- Cấu trúc When thường sử dụng với các hành động xảy ra trong khoảng thời gian ngắn hoặc rất ngắn. Ví dụ: Harry should cover his mouth when yawning. (Harry nên che miệng khi ngáp.)
- Cấu trúc When còn được sử dụng để đề cập tới các giai đoạn và chu kỳ của cuộc sống. Ví dụ: Daisy went there when she was ten years old. (Daisy đã tới đây khi cô ấy được 10 tuổi.)

3. Đảo ngữ cấu trúc When trong tiếng Anh
Hardly/Scarcely + had + S + PII (Past Participle) when + S + V(ed) = Vừa mới…. thì….
Ví dụ: Hardly had Jenny left the house when she found out that she forgot her wallet. (Jenny vừa mới ra khỏi nhà thì cô ấy phát hiện ra mình quên ví tiền của mình.)
