Khái niệm A number of và The number of
“A number of” là cụm từ thuộc lượng từ, mang nghĩa là một vài hoặc một vài những.
“A number of” thông thường được dùng khi muốn nói có một vài thứ gì hoặc một vài người, sau nó là danh từ số nhiều và động từ chia số nhiều.
Ví dụ: A number of rabbits are eating carrots. (Một vài con thỏ đang gặm cà rốt).
“The number of” là cụm từ thuộc lượng từ, mang 2 nghĩa khác nhau đó là nghĩa chỉ số lượng và nghĩa chỉ tính chất.
- Nghĩa chỉ số lượng: có nghĩa là “những” dùng để chỉ số lượng tương đối nhiều trong tiếng Anh. Đi sau “the number of” là danh từ số nhiều nhưng động từ chia ở ngôi ba số ít.
- Nghĩa chỉ tính chất: Trường hợp này “the number of” dùng để chỉ tính chất của sự vật. Ở một vài trường hợp đặc biệt, động từ kèm theo sau nó là được chia ở ngôi ba số ít.
Ví dụ:
- Today, the number of flowers are greater than yesterday. (Hôm nay số lượng bông hoa đã nhiều hơn hôm qua)
- The number of days in a years is 365. (Số ngày trong một năm là 365 ngày)
Cách dùng A number of và The number of trong tiếng Anh
1. Cách dùng của “a number of”
- Cấu trúc: A number of + N (số nhiều) + V (số nhiều)
A number of trong tiếng Anh được sử dụng khi người dùng muốn nói về một vài thứ gì đó hoặc một vài người.
Ví dụ:
- There are a number of precious lessons from my classmates. (Có một số những bài học quý giá từ những người bạn cùng lớp của tôi)
- A number of families have lost their car. (Có một vài gia đình đã mất chiếc xe hơi)
2. Cách dùng của “the number of”
“The number of” trong tiếng Anh được sử dụng theo 2 cách khác nhau là: Chỉ số lượng và chỉ tính chất.
- Nghĩa chỉ số lượng:
- Cấu trúc: The number of + N (số nhiều) + V (số ít)
Ví dụ:
- The number of children in that room is small. (Số lượng trẻ trong phòng đó thì ít)
- The number of students here is very big. (Số lượng người học sinh ở đây là rất lớn)
- Nghĩa chỉ tính chất:
- Cấu trúc: The number of + N (số nhiều) + V (số nhiều)
Ví dụ:
- The number of children in that room are small. (Số trẻ có trong phòng này đều nhỏ tuổi)
- The number of students there is quite big. (Số lượng học sinh nộp đơn ở đó khá lớn tuổi)

Lưu ý: Theo sau “A number of” và “The number of” luôn luôn là danh từ số nhiều đếm được, không thể là danh từ không đếm được.
