Định nghĩa Too, As well, Also

“too”, “as well” và “also” đều là các trạng từ và đều mang cùng một ý nghĩa - chính điều này khiến 3 từ này có thể dễ bị nhầm lẫn với nhau về mặt cấu trúc. Ngoài ra, về mặt sắc thái, cách dùng và mức độ trang trọng của mỗi từ cũng khác nhau nếu đặt trong từng văn phong khác nhau.

Theo Cambridge, định nghĩa của 3 từ này như sau:

• too: more than is needed or wanted; more than is suitable or enough.
• also: in addition; similarly
• as well: also; too

As well là một trang từ có nghĩa là “cũng, cũng như”, “ngoài ra”, “thêm vào đó”, hoặc “nữa đấy”. As well dùng ở cuối câu, không được dùng dấu phẩy trước As well.

Tương tự như As well, also và too cũng là trạng từ ngụ ý rằng từ hay một phần của câu mà chúng kết hợp đã thêm vào điều gì đã được nói đến trước đó. Also, too, khác nhau về mức độ trang trọng và vị trí trong câu.

Also thì trang trọng nhất, và thường đi trước động từ hoặc tính từ (nhưng sau be nếu đây là động từ chính). Too thường ít trang trọng (formal) hơn As well và cũng thường đứng cuối câu.

Phân biệt As well - Also - Too

Cả 3 từ “too”, “as well”, “also” đề mang chung một ý nghĩa là “cũng vậy” nhưng sự khác biệt rõ ràng nhất của chúng là vị trí của mỗi từ ở trong câu. Dưới đây sẽ là cách để người học tiếng anh phân biệt 3 từ này với nhau:

Too

Cả “too” và “as well” rất giống nhau vì chúng xuất hiện tại cùng một vị trí là ở cuối mỗi câu nói.

Ví dụ:

Are they go to the park too/as well? (Dịch: Họ cũng đi đến công viên phải không?)

I want to reach the top of the mountain too/as well. (Dịch: Tôi cũng muốn lên đến đỉnh núi.)

He has the right to participate in the activities. He is a member of the club too/as well. (Dịch: Anh ta có quyền tham gia vào các hoạt động. Anh ấy cũng là một thành viên của câu lạc bộ.)

Trong giao tiếp, “too” thường được dùng trong văn phong không quá trang trọng và đứng ở vị trí cuối câu. Ví trí và ý nghĩa của từ này mang tính nhấn mạnh cho từ, cụm từ đằng trước nó.

Lưu ý:

(1) Một điểm cần chú ý của “Too” và “As well” là chúng thường xuất hiện nhiều hơn trong giao tiếp hàng ngày so với “Also”

(2) Trong văn viết, thỉnh thoảng sẽ sử dụng dấu phẩy (,) trước và sau từ too (Ví dụ: I, too, she look really awful that day because she overcome an dogs and cats rain - Dịch: Tôi cũng vậy, hôm đó cô ấy trông thật kinh khủng vì phải vượt qua cơn mưa lớn)

(3) “Too” thường được sử dụng khi trả lời lại những cụm từ thường dùng, ví dụ như lời chúc, hay trong những lời đáp lại mà chỉ có một đại từ riêng lẻ.

Also

Mặc dù Also thường được xuất hiện trong văn viết nhưng vẫn có thể dùng trong văn giao tiếp trực tiếp hàng ngày. “Also” đứng ở nhiều vị trí trong câu. Thông thường từ này thường dùng để nhấn mạnh câu văn đằng sau nó hoặc để thêm một quan điểm hay chủ đề khác và mang một ý nghĩa trang trọng hơn so với “too”.

“Also” có 3 vị trí đứng trong câu:

Đứng sau chủ ngữ (After the subject)

Ví dụ: I can speak Vietnamese because I learned it when I was young. I also speak Chinese fluently nowadays on the ground that I am exposed to them on a daily basis. (Dịch: Tôi có thể nói tiếng Việt vì tôi đã học nó khi tôi còn nhỏ. Hiện nay tôi cũng nói tiếng Trung trôi chảy vì tôi được tiếp xúc với họ hàng ngày.)

Ở giữa trợ động từ và động từ chính của câu (After aux & before main verb)

Ví dụ (Example): The price of food these days is much more expensive. Following the increase in food, the price of petrol has also risen. (Dịch: Giá thực phẩm những ngày này đắt đỏ hơn rất nhiều. Sau thực phẩm tăng, giá xăng dầu cũng tăng theo.)

Sau động từ “to be” khi “to be” là động từ chính

Trong trường hợp này, nghĩa của từ “also” thường liên quan đến cả mệnh đề trước đó

Trường hợp đặc biệt: “Also” cũng có một nét nghĩa khác. Trong một số trường hợp, người bản xứ sử dụng Also = In addition (Dịch nghĩa: Ngoài ra). Với nét nghĩa này, “Also” sẽ được đặt ở đầu câu.

Ví dụ: I will get in touch with you next week. Also, I have to contact my supervisors to ask for permission. (Dịch: Tôi sẽ liên lạc với bạn vào tuần tới. Ngoài ra, tôi phải liên hệ với những người giám sát của mình để xin phép.)

As well

Tính chất của “as well” thường được dùng phổ biến trong văn nói, được hạn chế dùng trong văn viết  và hầu như từ này thường xuất hiện vào cuối câu.

Ví dụ: I have to work on Saturdays as well because I want to promote my career path fast.  (Dịch: Tôi cũng phải làm việc vào thứ Bảy vì tôi muốn thăng tiến nhanh trên con đường sự nghiệp của mình.)
