Head over heels là gì?

Phát âm: /hed ˈəʊvə hiːlz/

Định nghĩa: Theo từ điển Cambridge, “head over heels” được giải nghĩa là “completely in love with another person” (yêu say đắm một ai đó).

Ví dụ: She was head over heels in love with him from the moment they met, unable to think of anything else but him. (Cô đã yêu anh ấy say đắm ngay từ giây phút họ gặp nhau, không thể nghĩ đến điều gì khác ngoài anh.)

Nguồn gốc của Head over heels

Cụm từ “head over heels” bắt nguồn từ cụm từ “heels over head” xuất hiện trong bản in của tuyển tập thơ “Early English Alliterative Poems” ra đời vào thế kỷ 14. Cụm từ “heels over head” miêu tả trạng thái giống như lộn nhào, đầu dưới đất, chân trên giơ lên trời. Tuy nhiên, vào thế kỷ 18, một nhà thơ vô danh đã đảo ngược cụm từ “heels over head” lúc bấy giờ:

“He gave [him] such an involuntary kick in the face as drove him head over heels”. (The Contemplative Man, 1771)

Từ đó cụm “head over heels” đã được ra đời, song mãi cho đến thế kỷ 19, nét nghĩa mà mọi người thường biết đến hiện nay (yêu say đắm một ai đó) mới được hình thành.

Cách dùng của Head over heels

Cụm “head over heels” thường kết hợp với động từ “to be” hoặc “fall”. Các giới từ có thể đi cùng với cụm từ nay bao gồm, “with” hoặc “for”.

Ví dụ: After their first date, they were head over heels for each other and couldn't stop smiling. (Sau buổi hẹn đầu tiên, họ đắm say trong tình yêu và không thể ngừng mỉm cười.)
