In order to mang nghĩa là “để”, “để mà”. Vì thế, cấu trúc In order to trong tiếng Anh có vai trò như một liên từ để diễn tả mục đích của một việc nào đó. Ví dụ:
Công thức của cấu trúc In order to trong tiếng Anh được chia làm hai trường hợp như sau:
Khi mục đích thực hiện hành động hướng tới chủ ngữ trong câu thì ta dùng cấu trúc In order to đi với động từ nguyên thể. Công thức:
| S + V + in order (not) to + V(inf) = làm gì để |
Ví dụ:
Khi mục đích thực hiện hành động trong câu hướng tới đối tượng khác (tân ngữ) thì chúng ta sử dụng cấu trúc In order for somebody. Công thức:
| S + V + in order + for somebody + (not) + to + V(inf) = làm gì để cho ai đó |

Chú ý: Không sử dụng to V để thay thế cho cấu trúc In order to dạng phủ định.
Cấu trúc In order to, So as to đều mang nghĩa là “để”. Được dùng trong câu nhằm diễn tả mục đích của hành động đã được nhắc đến. Đồng thời cũng được sử dụng để nối hai câu chỉ mục đích lại với nhau. Công thức:

Ví dụ:
Cấu trúc In order to và So that/In order that đều được sử dụng để diễn tả mục đích. Khi sử dụng cấu trúc này thì bạn có thể kết hợp với những động từ khuyết thiếu như will/can/would/could… Công thức:
| S1 + V1 + so that/in order that + S2 + will/would/can/could + (not) + V2. |
Ví dụ:
Qua các ví dụ trên, có thể thấy cấu trúc In order to và In order that/So that tuy công thức khác nhau nhưng ý nghĩa đều chỉ mục đích của hành động trong câu.
