Neither nor và Either or | Cách dùng, cấu trúc, các trường hợp đặc biệt và bài tập vận dụng
Either … or mang ý nghĩa là “hoặc…hoặc”. Nó được sử dụng để đưa ra khả năng có thể xảy ra đồng thời với 2 đối tượng được nhắc đến.
Vị trí đầu câu: Dùng cho câu khẳng định, mang nghĩa “Hoặc…hoặc…”. Đồng thời, bạn cần lưu ý chia động từ theo danh từ/ đại từ thứ 2 (sau “or”).
| Either N1 or N2 + V (chia theo N2)…: Hoặc … hoặc … |
Ví dụ: Either Hai or his little sister is invited to the party tonight.
(Hoặc Hải hoặc em gái của anh ấy sẽ được mời đến bữa tiệc tối nay.)
Vị trí giữa câu: Dùng cho câu khẳng định, nhằm để nối 2 danh từ/ đại từ với nhau.

Ví dụ: Mr.John usually eats bread or rice for breakfast.
(Ông John thường ăn bánh mì hoặc cơm cho bữa sáng.)
Neither … nor mang ý nghĩa là “không… cũng không”. Cấu trúc này được sử dụng khi chúng ta muốn phủ định đồng thời cả 2 đối tượng được nhắc đến.
Vị trí đầu câu: Thường dùng cho câu phủ định, mang nghĩa “Không…cũng không”. Bên cạnh đó, bạn cần lưu ý phải chia động từ theo Noun 2 (sau “nor”).

Ví dụ: Neither Lan or her friends are going to the party tonight.
(Cả Lan và các bạn của cô ấy đều không đến buổi tiệc tối nay.)
Vị trí giữa câu: Dùng cho câu phủ định, nhằm để nối 2 danh từ/ đại từ với nhau.

Ví dụ: I eat food including neither garlic nor onion.
(Tôi không ăn thực phẩm chứa hành và tỏi.)
Cách sử dụng Neither… nor… và Either… or… hoàn toàn khác nhau.
Đối với “Either…or…” sẽ thường sử dụng nhằm đưa ra các sự lựa chọn giữa 1 trong 2 khả năng. Điều này có nghĩa là “Hoặc cái này…hoặc cái kia”. Trái lại, cụm “Neither…nor…” được sử dụng nhằm đưa ra sự phủ định cho cả 2 trường hợp với ý nghĩa “Cả…và…đều không”.
Ví dụ:
Nhiều người vẫn chưa thật sự hiểu rõ sự khác nhau về bản chất cơ bản giữa hai cụm từ này. Cụ thể, cụm “Neither…nor…” sẽ thường dùng trong câu phủ định. Ngược lại, “Either…or…” được sử dụng đối với câu khẳng định.
Ví dụ:
Câu đảo ngữ trong Tiếng Anh là một dạng phổ biến, thường gặp khi giao tiếp cũng như trong các đề thi. Vậy “Neither… nor…” và “Either… or…” khi áp dụng trong câu đảo ngữ sẽ có cấu trúc như nào? Sau đây là cách dùng Neither… nor… và Either… or… trong câu đảo ngữ:

| Neither + Trợ động từ + S + V (dạng khẳng định) + nor + V2 (dạng khẳng định) |
Ví dụ:
Mary didn’t go to the cinema yesterday. Neither did his brother.
(Mary không tới rạp chiếu phim vào tối qua. Anh trai cô ấy cũng không.)
Neither did Linh clean the house nor washes her clothes.
(Linh không lau nhà và cũng không giặt quần áo.)

Ví dụ: An didn’t go to school. His friend didn’t, either.
(An đã không đi học. Bạn anh ấy cũng vậy.)
Đối với cách sử dụng Neither… nor và Either… or đặt tại vị trí đầu câu, động từ theo sau sẽ được chia theo chủ ngữ thứ 2 (Danh từ/ Đại từ) đứng sau “nor” hoặc “or”.
Ví dụ: Neither Tam nor her best friends like cooking.
(Cả Tâm và những người bạn thân của cô ấy đều không thích nấu ăn.)
Ở câu trên, động từ “like” được chia theo chủ ngữ thứ 2 là “her best friends”.
Để chuyển đổi những câu có chứa “Neither… nor” sang “Either… or”, chúng ta cần áp dụng công thức:

Ví dụ: Linh likes neither blue dress nor red dress = Linh doesn’t like either blue dress or red one.
(Linh không thích váy xanh cũng không thích váy đỏ.)
