Not only but also là gì? | Cách dùng, cấu trúc và bài tập vận dụng
Not only but also là gì?
Cấu trúc Not only but also mang nghĩa là “không những… mà còn…”. Đây là dạng cấu trúc ngữ pháp được sử dụng khá phổ biến trong tiếng Anh, được dùng để nhấn mạnh về đặc tính hay hành động của sự việc, sự vật nào đó.
Cấu trúc Not only but also dùng để nối hai từ hay cụm từ có cùng tính chất, vị trí, đồng thời nhấn mạnh ý cần diễn đạt của hai vế này. Ví dụ:
- Kathy is not only lovely but also funny. (Kathy không những đáng yêu mà còn vui tính.)
➡ Câu này để chỉ rằng Kathy vừa đáng yêu vừa vui tính. Có thể nói một cách bình thường là: Kathy is lovely and funny. (Kathy đáng yêu và vui tính). Nhưng khi sử dụng cấu trúc Not only but also thì hai vế này được nhấn mạnh hơn.
Cách dùng cấu trúc Not only but also
Có rất nhiều cách để thành lập câu với cấu trúc Not only but also để nhấn mạnh loại từ trong câu. Hãy tham khảo những cách dùng và cấu trúc Not only but also được 1900 tổng hợp cụ thể như sau:

Trong cấu trúc Not only but also, ta có thể để nguyên cụm “but also” hoặc bỏ “also” đi. Ngoài ra cũng có thể tách “also” ra khỏi “but”. Ví dụ:
- Martin drives not only carefully but slowly also. (Martin lái xe không chỉ cẩn thận mà còn chậm rãi.)
Đảo ngữ cấu trúc Not only but also
Ngoài các cấu trúc Not only but also căn bản trên, bạn đừng bỏ qua cấu trúc Not only but also đảo ngữ nữa nhé vì nó cũng thường xuyên suất hiện trong các bài tập ngữ pháp tiếng Anh đó! như sau:

Lưu ý khi sử dụng cấu trúc Not only but also
Sau khi học về cấu trúc Not only but also, chúng mình hãy cẩn thận và lưu ý một số điều sau đây để tránh gặp phải lỗi sai không đáng có nhé:
1. Hai vế trong câu có cùng từ loại
Bạn chú ý khi sử dụng cấu trúc Not only but also thì cần phải đưa hai vế trong câu thống nhất về cùng từ loại. Ví dụ một trường hợp câu sai:
Daisy is not only talented but also a composer. (Daisy không những tài giỏi mà còn là nhà soạn nhạc.)➡ Sai
Trong trường hợp trên, “talented” là tính từ và “composer” là danh từ. Hai từ này không tương đồng với nhau, vì thế đây là 1 câu sai. Ví dụ câu đúng như sau:
- Daisy is not only talented but also creative. (Daisy không chỉ tài năng mà còn sáng tạo.)
Trong trường hợp trên, cả “talented” và “creative” đều là tính từ, vì thế đây là câu đúng.
2. Sử dụng từ vựng phù hợp với ngữ cảnh
Một lưu ý tiếp theo đó chính là những từ vựng được dùng cần phải phù hợp với cả hai vế. Việc sử dụng từ vựng không phù hợp với ngữ cảnh là một lỗi sai thường gặp trong cấu trúc Not only but also. Ví dụ một trường hợp câu sai:
Kathy drinks not only the coffee but also the chicken.➡ Sai
Trong câu này động từ ở phía trước cụm Not only chỉ dùng được cho “coffee” chứ không sử dụng được cho “chicken”. Không ai “uống” được “gà” cả phải không nào? Ví dụ câu đúng:
- Kathy drinks not only coffee but also soda. (Kathy không những uống cà phê mà còn uống soda.)
