1. Âm hữu thanh

Âm hữu thanh là những âm mà khi nói, âm xuất phát từ dây thanh quản, đi qua lưỡi, đến răng, sau đó âm đi ra ngoài và làm rung thanh quản. Để xác định âm hữu thanh, bạn đặt nhẹ ngón tay lên cổ họng và phát âm /r/ chẳng hạn. Bạn sẽ nhận thấy cổ họng có rung, tức đó là âm hữu thanh. 

Các phụ âm hữu thanh trong tiếng Anh gồm có: /b/, /d/, /g/, /δ/, /ʒ/, /dʒ/, /m/, /n/, /ng/, /l/, /r/, /y/, /w/, /v/ và /z/.

2. Âm vô thanh

Trái ngược với âm hữu thanh, âm vô thanh là những âm mà cổ họng không rung khi phát âm. Cụ thể, âm vô thanh bật ra bằng hơi từ miệng, tạo ra tiếng xì hoặc tiếng gió. Ví dụ, bạn đặt tay cách miệng khoảng 5cm và phát âm /f/, bạn sẽ cảm thấy có gió từ miệng và tiếng xì phát ra. 

Các phụ âm vô thanh trong tiếng Anh gồm có: /p/, /k/, /f/, /t/, /s/, /θ/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /h/

3 QUY TẮC PHÁT ÂM ĐUÔI S/ES TRONG TIẾNG ANH

1. Đuôi s, es được phát âm là /s/

Những từ có phụ âm cuối là /t/, /p/, /f/, /k/, /ð/ thì đuôi s, es được phát âm là /s/

Ví dụ: • Students  /ˈstjuː.dənts/: học sinh

• Stops /stɒps/: dừng lại
• Beliefs /bɪˈliːfs/: sự tin tưởng
• Books /bʊks/: sách
• Months /mʌnθs/: tháng

2. Đuôi s, es được phát âm là /iz/

Những từ có phụ âm cuối là các âm /s/, /z/, /∫/, /t∫/, /ʒ/ /dʒ/ (thường kết thúc là các chữ cái ce, se, cy, x, z, sh, ch, s, ge) thì đuôi s, es được phát âm là /iz/

Ví dụ: • Influences /ˈɪn.flu.ənsiz/: gây ảnh hưởng

• Nurses /nɜːsiz/: y tá
• Changes /’t∫eindʒiz/: thay đổi
• Policies /ˈpɒl.ə.siz/: chính sách
• Buses /bʌsiz/: xe buýt
• Kisses /kɪsiz/: nụ hôn
• Freezes /friːziz/: đóng băng

3. Đuôi s, es được phát âm là /z/

Đối với các trường hợp còn lại, những từ có phụ âm cuối kết thúc bằng /b/, /g/, /d/, /ð/, /v/, /l/, /r/, /m/, /n/, /η/ (thường có là những chữ cái b, d, g, l, m, n, ng, r, ve, y) và những nguyên âm (u, e, a, i, o) thì đuôi s, es được phát âm là /z/

Ví dụ: • Plays /pleɪz/: chơi

• Jobs /dʒɒbz/: nghề nghiệp
• Islands /ˈaɪ.ləndz/: hòn đảo
• Sings /sɪŋz/: ca hát
• Drives /draɪvz/: lái xe
