Suggest là gì? 

Suggest là cấu trúc phổ biến trong tiếng Anh, thường được dùng khi muốn đưa ra một lời khuyên, lời đề nghị hoặc để gợi ý gián tiếp, hay thậm chí để nói chung chung không ám chỉ người cụ thể nào trong những tình huống trang trọng.

Cấu trúc Suggest

1. Cấu trúc 1: Suggest + noun/noun phrase (Suggest + danh từ/cụm danh từ)

Ở cấu trúc Suggest đầu tiên này thì cụm danh từ có vai trò là tân ngữ của động từ “suggest” trong câu.

Ví dụ:

• John suggested vodka with this dish. (John đề nghị dùng rượu vodka với món ăn này.)
• Jenny suggested some tea for breakfast. (Jenny gợi ý một chút trà cho bữa sáng.)

Ngoài ra, với trường hợp người dùng muốn đề cập đến đối tượng nhận được lời đề nghị thì ta dùng cấu trúc Suggest sth to sb. 

Ví dụ:

• Can you suggest a good book to Anna? (Bạn có thể gợi ý một cuốn sách tốt cho Anna được không?)
• Jenny suggested an amazing film to John. (Jenny gợi ý một bộ phim hay cho John.)

2. Cấu trúc 2: Suggest + that-clause (Suggest + mệnh đề “that”)

Khi muốn đưa ra một đề xuất, ý kiến, bạn có thể dùng mệnh đề “that” theo sau động từ Suggest. Bên cạnh đó, ở những tình huống không trang trọng thì ta có thể bỏ “that” ra khỏi mệnh đề trong cấu trúc Suggest.

Lưu ý: Với trường hợp dùng mệnh đề “that” thì động từ theo sau phải ở dạng nguyên mẫu không có “to”.

Ví dụ:

• Peter suggests (that) they go out to have lunch. (Peter đề nghị họ ra ngoài ăn trưa.)
• Anna suggested (that) her class go camping next summer. (Anna gợi ý lớp cô ấy có thể đi cắm trại vào mùa hè tới).
• Jenny suggests that her boyfriend (should) lose weight. (Jenny khuyên bạn trai của cô ấy nên giảm cân).

Bên cạnh mang nghĩa đề xuất thì cấu trúc Suggest trong trường hợp này cũng có nghĩa là “ám chỉ” (= imply). Ví dụ: Are you suggesting that Jenny is lazy? (Bạn ám chỉ Jenny lười biếng đúng không?)

Ngoài ra, cụm từ “suggest itself to somebody” còn có nghĩa là chợt nảy ra điều gì. Ví dụ: A result immediately suggested itself to John. (John chợt nghĩ ra một đáp án.)

3. Cấu trúc 3: Suggest + V-ing

Cấu trúc Suggest + V-ing được sử dụng khi ta diễn tả một hành động nhưng không nói cụ thể là ai sẽ thực hiện hành động đó.

Ví dụ:

• Peter suggested travelling together for safety, since this area was dangerous. (Peter đề xuất nên đi du lịch cùng nhau cho an toàn vì khu vực đó rất nguy hiểm.)
• Jenny suggested going to the cinema on Sunday. (Jenny đề xuất đi tới rạp chiếu phim vào chủ nhật).
• John suggested reading more books to broaden the knowledge. (John đề xuất đọc nhiều sách hơn để mở rộng kiến thức.)

4. Cấu trúc 4: Suggest + Wh-question word (Suggest + từ để hỏi)

Cấu trúc Suggest cũng có thể dùng những từ để hỏi như “where, what, when, who, how” kèm theo sau động từ Suggest. 

Ví dụ:

• Could Peter suggest where Anna might be able to buy a laptop for her? (Peter có thể gợi ý cho Anna chỗ để mua laptop không?)
• Could Anna suggest where our class can eat today? (Anna có thể gợi ý xem lớp mình có thể ăn ở đâu được không?)

Cách dùng cấu trúc suggest

1. Cách dùng cấu trúc Suggest + gerund 

Cách dùng	Ví dụ
Cấu trúc Suggest này được dùng chủ yếu trong các tình huống trang trọng, sử dụng để nói chung chung không nhắc đến một người cụ thể nào.	Why suggest going to Da Nang in July when the city is the most jammed? (Sao lại khuyên đến Đà Nẵng vào tháng bảy khi thành phố này đông nghịt người?)
Bạn cũng có thể dùng cấu trúc Suggest này nhằm nhấn mạnh điều mình muốn đề nghị, chứ không phải dùng để nhấn mạnh người thực hiện hành động trong đề nghị ấy.	He also suggests going with your mother to her appointments. ( Anh ấy cũng khuyên nên đi với mẹ đến chỗ hẹn hò với cô ta.)
Đôi khi người nói hoặc người viết muốn tránh ám chỉ người đọc là có vấn đề, sử dụng vài lời đề nghị có thể làm người nghe xấu hổ bằng cấu trúc Suggest + gerund	I suggest planning ahead. (Tôi đề nghị nên lập kế hoạch trước.)

Lưu ý:

• Trong các trường hợp sử dụng trên, người nói có ý tránh không muốn nói “I suggest (that) you…” vì không muốn ngụ ý cụ thể rằng chính bạn (đối phương) là người bị ảnh hưởng trong vấn đề đang đề cập đến, để tránh không làm mất lòng đối phương.
• Thông thường trong tiếng Anh, cấu trúc Sugeest + gerund này dùng trong văn viết, bởi vì văn viết thường mang tính trang trọng hơn văn nói.

2. Cách dùng cấu trúc Suggest that S + V

Cách dùng	Ví dụ
Bạn sử dụng cấu trúc Suggest that S + V khi muốn khuyên trực tiếp thẳng thừng một người hoặc nhóm người cụ thể.	I suggest that you and your husband do daily exercise to keep blood pressure down. (Tôi đề nghị bà và chồng bà nên tập thể dục hàng ngày để giảm huyết áp.) The teacher suggested that John do all the homework. (Giáo viên đề nghị John làm hết bài tập về nhà.)
Khi dùng thì hiện tại tiếp diễn với cấu trúc Suggest that S + V (tôi đang định đề nghị…), cho thấy người nói đang muốn đề nghị điều gì đó hoặc muốn giải thích tại sao mình lại có lời khuyên/đề nghị như vậy.	I am suggesting that our team do something to deal with this problem, but I don’t yet have a good solution. (Tôi đang định đề nghị làm việc gì đó để giải quyết rắc rối này, nhưng tôi chưa nghĩ ra cách giải quyết nào tốt.)
Ngoài ra, cấu trúc Suggest dùng để đề cử/tiến cử người phù hợp với một chức vụ hoặc đề cập một vật có thể dùng cho mục đích, tình huống nào đó. Ở trường hợp này, ta sử dụng cấu trúc Suggest sth/sb for sth.	Peter suggested Anna for the leader team. (Peter đề cử Anna cho chức vụ trưởng nhóm.)  The shoes suggest that John was at the scene of the crime. (Đôi giày cho thấy John đã có mặt ở hiện trường vụ án.)

=> I suggest Mary should get a headache.

“Alen would learn that course if I were you”, said Nicky.

=> Nicky suggested Alen (should) learn that course.

Why don’t he ask her yourself.

=>  I suggest he should ask her yourself.

They ate more vegetables and fruits.

=>  She suggests they should eat more vegetables and fruits.

“Why doesn’t he book a flight on website?”, said Anna.

=> Anna suggested he book a flight on website.

“How about having a picnic?”, Hana asked.

=> Hana suggested having a picnic.
