The advancement of technology has profoundly initiated online interaction among individuals via the widespread use of social platforms. This trend plays a pivotal role in keeping in contact and widening a person's social network; however, I am of the opinion that its drawbacks outweigh those aforementioned advantages.

On the one hand, the replacement of face-to-face interaction with social media is beneficial in terms of getting in touch with acquaintances as well as broadening personal networks. First of all, it is undeniable that the use of social media allows people to connect to their beloved at ease regardless of geographical location. For example, the application Facebook or Twitter has enabled students studying abroad to contact their family members easily on a daily basis. Furthermore, the proliferation of these online platforms provides people with ample opportunities to make friends with other individuals across the globe. Having international peers is becoming more common as these social sites equip their users with features to find and form friendships with others from other countries.

However, I deem the downsides of the substitution of in-person interaction with online tools more disadvantageous. To begin with, it goes without saying that the use of social media would potentially reduce the quality of interpersonal relationships. People have a tendency to use text or show no desire in face-to-face interactions; also, the addiction to screens has been an alarming issue that needs to be addressed. This phenomenon is detrimental as gradually people’s capability of being flexible and creative in using verbal means of communication would significantly be reduced. Besides, the use of social media poses the threat of losing personal information. Obviously, it is compulsory for individuals to register by providing personal data to become users of these platforms, this source of information could be used for evil purposes such as blackmailing or kidnapping.

In conclusion, despite the potential of maintaining contact as well as widening social network of social media, I am in consummate accord with the idea that the replacement of these sites with in-person interaction does more harm than good in terms of interpersonal relationships as well as personal information.

These days, face-to-face communication is being replaced with online conversations using social media apps, such as Facebook, WhatsApp or Tumblr. It seems to me that the benefits these technologies have brought to our lives are overshadowed by their drawbacks.

In terms of the advantages, social networking sites have made it much easier for us to keep in contact with our loved ones, regardless of geographic location. Students studying abroad, for example, can keep in touch with their families and friends on a daily basis using the video call features of Skype, Facebook or various other apps. Social media is also a powerful tool in marketing and business. In this digital age, companies can keep their clients updated regarding newly-released products or promotions by posting their campaigns on Facebook or Instagram, which helps save a great deal of time and expense compared to the traditional methods of advertising in newspapers or magazines.

Despite the above benefits, I personally believe that when it comes to communication, social media does more harm than good. The overuse of social media reduces the quality of interpersonal communication. Many people are so addicted to social networking sites that they constantly stare at their screens during dinners with their families without actually paying attention to the people around them. The frequent use of social media also affects the style of speaking and writing, especially among young people. These days, many teenagers have a habit of using abbreviated words, which are frequently used in text messages or in posts on social media, in their academic essays or formal emails.

In conclusion, for the reasons mentioned above, I am of the opinion that the positive effects that social media has on our communication are outweighed by the disadvantages.

  • make it much easier for somebody to do something: trở nên dễ dàng cho ai đó làm gì

  • regardless of …: không thể tới …
  • on a daily basis: hàng ngày

  • newly-released products: các sản phẩm mới được tung ra thị trường
  • a great deal of = a lot of: nhiều
  • do more harm than good: hại nhiều hơn lợi
  • the overuse of …: việc sử dụng cái gì quá mức
  • to be addicted to …: nghiện cái gì
  • pay attention to …: chú ý tới …
  • abbreviated words: các từ viết tắt
  • have a habit of …: có thói quen làm gì

Nowadays, it is increasingly common to witness people using social media in place of real-life interactions. While this trend can be advantageous for international networking, I believe the downsides of social connections and exposure to fraud are much more significant.

The foremost drawback of reduced in-person dialogue is the detrimental impact on interpersonal relationships. As people go online more often, their engagement in face-to-face conversations with others in their immediate surroundings diminishes significantly, leading to a decrease in the frequency of intimate conversations that foster emotional connection. Consequently, people may be unable to provide essential support when their friends or family members suffer from emotional or psychological difficulties.

In addition, there is the risk of scams associated with the use of online communication in place of traditional physical interactions. It is because cyber criminals can easily conceal their identity and entice users to provide them with personal details in online conversations. In Vietnam, thousands of cases of online fraud were reported last year with victims unknowingly sending photos of their credit cards over Facebook chat to hackers disguised as bank tellers. Subsequently, their bank accounts were then hacked and all the money was instantly transferred to the criminals’ offshore accounts which are nearly impossible to trace.

However, I admit that communication on social sites such as Twitter or Facebook has fostered cross-border connections that would otherwise not be possible. More specifically, the inexpensive and convenient platforms that these sites offer allow people from different countries to interact more freely and frequently, rather than people only associating with their contemporaries locally. In fact, a number of activities including cultural exchange programs are rooted in these frequent interactions, resulting in enhanced mutual understanding at both individual and global level.

In conclusion, although the prevalence of communication through social media can contribute to the global community, I am of the opinion that it is rather disadvantageous given the consequences of interpersonal bonds and increased cybercrime. That is why it is advisable that people should limit the use of social media to prioritise and enjoy quality time with those around them.

  • Real-life interactions: Tương tác thực tế

  • Reduced emotional connection: Giảm kết nối cảm xúc

  • The risk of scams: Nguy cơ lừa đảo
  • Conceal their identity: Che giấu danh tính của họ
  • Entice users: Lôi kéo người dùng
  • Disguised as: Cải trang thành
