Cấu trúc Would rather là gì?
1. Khái niệm
Cấu trúc Would rather là gì? Theo từ điển Cambridge, Would rather “ is used to show that you prefer to have or do one thing more than another” ➞ Tạm dịch: Would rather được sử dụng để thể hiện bạn muốn/thích cái gì hơn. Ví dụ:
- Which would you rather do - go fishing or play badminton? (Bạn thích đi đâu hơn? Câu cá hay chơi cầu lông?)
- I’d rather have a banana than an apple. (Tôi thích ăn chuối hơn là ăn táo.)
- He'd rather fail than let me think he needed help. (Anh ấy thà thất bại còn hơn để tôi nghĩ là anh ấy cần sự giúp đỡ.)
2. Dạng viết tắt của Would rather

1.1. Cấu trúc Would rather
Cấu trúc Would rather tạm dịch là “thích cái gì/làm gì”, “muốn cái gì/làm gì”, thường được sử dụng khi diễn tả mong muốn, sở thích của ai đó.

1.2. Cấu trúc Would rather … than …
Ngoài cấu trúc Would rather mang ý nghĩa là “thích cái gì/làm gì” thì cấu trúc Would rather … than còn dùng để so sánh 2 thứ với nhau ➞ “thích cái gì hơn cái gì”. Cụ thể:

Cấu trúc Would rather that dùng ở thì quá khứ để thể hiện mong muốn, nuối tiếc hoặc giả định về điều gì đó trong quá khứ. Cấu trúc:

3. Cấu trúc “Would much rather” dùng để nhấn mạnh
Chúng ta có thể sử dụng “Would much rather” để nhấn mạnh sự yêu thích của mình đối với cái gì (hơn cái gì đó). Ví dụ:
- I’d much rather make a phone call than send an email. (Tôi thực sự thích nhắn tin hơn là gọi điện.)
- She’d much rather they didn’t know about what had happened. (Cô ấy thực sự không muốn họ biết điều gì đã xảy ra.)
4. Cấu trúc “Would rather not” thay cho “No”
Ngoài ra, thay vì sử dụng “No” để từ chối trong các trường hợp mời, yêu cầu, đề nghị làm gì đó, chúng ta có thể chọn “Would rather not” để thay thế. Ví dụ:
- A: Do you want to go for a coffee? (Bạn có muốn đi uống cafe không?)
- B: I’d rather not, if you don’t mind. (Tôi e là không được rồi.)
