
The Product Developer II manages development of new products from initial concept to sales sample. Delivers projects and related samples according to predetermined timelines. Evaluates competitive developments with an eye towards improving the company's products.
Responsibilities:
Develops product specifications and coordinates all aspects of product development from concepts to product confirmation for assigned models, under the direction of the Mgr-Product Development.
Provides input in the design process about cost, production, and functional componentry.
Sets up detailed development plans for assigned models using timelines with specific target dates to ensure samples are delivered to merchandising department according to schedule. Provides continuous and detailed progress reports to the Mgr-Product Development.
Maintains close communication with the overseas development staff by reviewing progress and resolving issues.
Reviews blueprints, 3D files, and other tech drawings to ensure accuracy and functionality of mold details. Reviews rapid prototype parts and models of molded components to help drive design integrity and functionality.
Collaborates with design and merchandising groups to identify materials, components, and construction options for each project.
Provides development team with up-to-date information on new materials, components, and procedures available in overseas factories.
Maintains current files on all assigned models currently being developed or produced overseas, which include sample request forms, latest specification sheet, specification change notices, blueprints, and other related information.
5% Performs other duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree, applicable certification or equivalent experience.
- Typically requires 2-4 years of professional experience, and general proficiency with tools, systems, and procedures required to accomplish the job.
- College degree with course work in manufacturing, engineering or related field.
- 3-5 years experience primarily in footwear development
- Must have a comprehensive working knowledge of footwear construction methods and manufacturing operations, especially pattern making, grading, and marking processes.
- A thorough knowledge of the outdoor footwear industry, PC software, (i.e., spreadsheets, databases, word-processing, and 2D/3D file review), and conducting business in Asian countries.
- An ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with management, staff, factories and vendors.
- Emphasis on clear communication with countries where English is a second language.
- Use considerable tact, sound judgment, and discretion in all contacts.
- Identify /evaluate problem areas and recommend effective solutions.
- Use exceptional time management skills to accomplish challenging objectives and manage heavy workload.
- Analyze a variety of data reporting results to management.
- Understand basic engineering, metric measurements, and blueprints.
- Use good color and texture perception to identify possible quality problems and salability of footwear.
- Possess strong organizational skills and work under pressure to meet strict timelines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to motivate individuals involved in the production process and negotiate production deadlines.
- Some pressure may exist when facing deadlines.

Other Physical Requirements:
Active Office: Generally less sedentary, may frequently require ability to move about or adjust/move items weighing up to 20 lbs. in all directions; Constantly requires collaboration and the ability to communicate with others to exchange information while in a typical office setting. Collaboration is generally conducted in person unless the role has been pre-approved for remote work.
