Adapt là gì?

Định nghĩa: Theo từ điển Oxford, “adapt” là một động từ (verb), mang nghĩa chính là: Thay đổi, thích nghi đề phù hợp với một điều gì đó (hoàn cảnh, điều kiện, trường hợp,…)

Các cấu trúc thường gặp

• Nhận nuôi (con, trẻ em, vật nuôi): to adopt somebody (child, kid, baby, pet,..)

My aunt has just adopted a 2 year-old baby called Tim. She was so happy with that. (Dì tôi mới nhận nuôi 1 đứa trẻ 2 tuổi tên là Tim. Dì ấy vui lắm.)

Most of the kids at this orphanage have been adopted at least once. (Phần lớn những đứa trẻ ở trại mồ côi này đã từng được nhận nuôi ít nhất 1 lần.)

Adopting a cat is not so easy as what people often think. (Nhận nuôi một chú mèo không hề dễ dàng như nhiều người vẫn thường nghĩ.)

• Tiếp nhận và sử dụng (phương pháp, tên, thái độ): to adopt something (resolution, policy, name, attitude,…

• to adapt (oneself) to something: (thay đổi bản thân để) thích nghi với điều gì

Working in this position means that you have to adapt to harsh working conditions. (Làm việc ở vị trí này đồng nghĩa với việc bạn sẽ phải thích nghi với những điều kiện làm việc rất khắc nghiệt.)

I had to adapt myself to the class during my first weeks at high school. (Tôi đã phải cố gắng thay đổi bản thân để thích nghi với lớp trong những tuần đầu tiên học cấp 3.)

• to adapt something (for something) (from something): thay đổi cái gì (để thích nghi, phù hợp với cái gì) (từ cái gì đó)

The film director decided to adapt the plot for a new trend. (Đạo diễn bộ phim quyết định thay đổi cốt truyện để phù hợp với xu hướng mới.)

The documentary has been adapted from the original one to be able to reach out to more various viewers. (Bộ phim tài liệu đã được thay đổi từ bản gốc để tiếp cận được nhiều người xem đa dạng hơn.)

Linda’s silver evening gown has been adapted for the recent “shiny gown” trend from a green one (Chiếc đầm dạ hội màu bạc của LInda đã được thay đổi từ màu xanh lá để phù hợp với xu hướng “đầm dạ hội lấp lánh" gần đây.)

Cách phân biệt Adopt và Adapt

Cách phân biệt: Ngoài sự khác biệt về ý nghĩa, người học có thể nhận biết và phân biệt 2 từ vựng này qua cách dùng cấu trúc của chúng. Trong khi “adopt” thường sử dụng trực tiếp tân ngữ (somebody/something), thì “adapt” thường có giới từ (preposition) đi cùng như from, for, to.
