Position Summary

Director, Student Experience & Success leads a portfolio of student support and services dedicated to the holistic development of all Higher Education, English, and Pathways students across all campuses. Through strategic and operational leadership, the Director is responsible for ensuring that core student-facing teams deliver a cohesive and exceptional student experience. With a focus on the synergy between academic development and success, wellbeing, individual goals, talent development, and lifelong learning, the teams within the Director’s portfolio significantly contribute to fostering an inclusive community of talented global citizens that will comprise the next generation of leaders.

Departments within the portfolio include Student and Family Connect, Student Academic Success, and Student Life, as part of the Office of the Dean of Students aligned to the Education portfolio. The Director will work closely with global University professional stakeholders (The Melbourne Students Executive team, the Academic Registrar’s Group (ARG), Library, Learning and Teaching, Wellbeing, and Careers) to propose, develop and maintain university-wide strategies that support student transition and belonging, ensure a dynamic student experience and bolster student achievement and engagement, from Orientation to Graduation and beyond.

The Director will also collaborate closely with academic leadership (Director of Academic Experience & Success), Deans of Schools, Discipline leads, Program Managers, and the Research Office) to develop student services and activities that align with and support learning practices, as well as contribute to the overall quality of learning and teaching at the University.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Provide strategic leadership, management and effective coordination of the student-facing departments with the Associate Director and within the Student Experience & Success portfolio to deliver on aims and objectives that provide a comprehensive and cohesive suite of student academic and experience services. (e.g. Student Advising, Learning Advising, Academic Success Advising, Peer Assisted Learning programs, Workshop Services, Student Clubs and Activities framework, the International Student support, Family and Parental facing support, Student Council, the Sport and Recreation facilities, Student Leadership development, and Orientation programs.)
  • Develop, forecast and manage expenditure within the approved budget that aligns with these aims and objectives.
  • Lead the formation, deployment and reporting of interdepartmental project leadership teams that contribute to University growth and strategic direction.
  • Develop, review and refine the aims and objectives of all teams within the Student Experience & Success portfolio (e.g. Student and Family Connect, Student Academic Success and Student Life) based on information from the University strategy and business plan documents, Executive Leadership Team Vietnam (ELT), the Dean of Students, the DVCE Education Portfolio, the Deans of Schools, and other relevant staff, students, and stakeholders, to ensure the portfolio is meeting the learning, engagement and experience needs of the students. Lead the communication of these aims and objectives to all relevant stakeholders within the University.
  • Collaborate closely with the Senior Manager of Student Life to engage and support the University’s Student Council on key initiatives and projects. Actively promote leadership development within the Student Council.
  • Lead the development and operation of both global and local web-based resources and systems that support the Student Experience & Success teams. Evaluate resources and systems to propose enhancements and better utilisation internally and to external system owners.
  • Develop, monitor and ensure the quality of student consultations, activities and interactions across the Student Experience & Success portfolio in regards to a high standard of customer service as well as alignment to lifelong learning and personal development principles, to include chairing of relevant committees.
  • Lead, facilitate and/or manage both internal and university-wide research or project initiatives that aim to increase student success and enhance the overall student experience. Facilitate opportunities for Student Experience & Success staff to develop professionally through these or similar projects, or in other Professional Development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Students and The Director of Academic Experience & Success by leading curriculum development, implementation, quality oversight and program evaluation of the UniStart Academic Pathway.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Master’s degree in relevant field (e.g. Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Curriculum Design, Developmental Psychology, Higher Education Administration).
  • An internationally recognised teaching qualification.
  • Proven outstanding educational leadership ability and achievement in executive management to lead, manage and motivate a team of professionals to successfully deliver a program of work and maintain a positive, collaborative organisational culture.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the Education sector; minimum 6 years of experience managing staff in an international university context.
  • Significant expertise and experience in leading student support and service models to a culturally and linguistically diverse student body within higher education.
  • Experience in leading and reporting on educational university /institution-wide projects related to student success and experience to deliver on outcomes.
  • High-level ability to analyse and interpret a complex range of information to address emerging issues in academic transition, learning support, and student engagement.
  • Excellent English, communication, organisational and administrative skills in order to effectively and professionally facilitate educational service delivery of large university teams.
  • Ability to display appropriate behaviours in line with the position and RMIT Values.

Preferred

  • Ability to provide expert advice with influence to academic, teaching and professional staff.
  • Well-developed leadership and interpersonal skills including negotiation, liaison, cross-cultural communication and report writing skills.
  • Experience and fluency using large university/intuitional management software tools as well as project management tools and software.
  • Experience analysing research and metrics data to formulate strategy and recommendations for improving student achievement, program enhancement and bettering the student experience.

English Proficiency

English is the language of teaching and communication at RMIT Vietnam. For this role, the minimum requirement is IELTS 6.5 (General) with a score of at least 6.0 or 170 in Lingua Skills.
